On I75 between Cincinnati and Dayton I got stoned in Ohio again. One week short of one year ago was the last time I had my windshield cracked between here and Detroit. It's hard to avoid these Dump Trucks when then enter the interstate right in front of you!!! Good news is my insurance comprehensive coverage pays 100% of the approximate $600 expense with no deductible. Whoopee!

P.S. "Annie"s odometer just turned 60,000 miles on my way home yesterday.
CAL, You need to call the Dealer and get your $100.00 back!!!!

The fix for the COPs is FREE for your car for 10 years or 100,000 miles!

It would probably be wise to pick up an Actron 9180 diagnostic tool if your are going to change them yourself. The unit will tell you exactly which coil is bad.It is a little pricey but it is less than the 400.00 plus dollars it takes to replace them.

If they go bad again, will they be covered ?
You were fortunate to get all 8 done, they usually only cover bad 03-05 cops, so count your lucky stars and be glad.

I didn't even have to go back to the dealer. You guys saved me $454.51. Thanks!!
Another good reason to check in to the site often and to do a search before going to the dealer with a problem. All dealerships are in business to make money and a lot of the service writters are not Harvard graduates

As I was leaving the parking lot in Gettysburg, on my way back home, (Mississippi) two coils went out.

I have replaced three, so this will make five. Only three more to go.

Re: Bad coils and only 10,000 miles.

Does this happen often... multiple coils going out at exactly the same time?
How do the coils fail? Do they begin to arc out of the coil body into the head or do they fail completely (no spark at all) due to some internal failure?
Do these cars throw an OBD II code for the malfunctioning coil such as PO301 (for coil #1) and so on?
                    Just curious....

Re: Bad coils and only 10,000 miles.

Usually, only 1 or 2 go out at the same time.
Do not know exactly why they fail, other than the rubber boot covering on them seems to fail.
yes, they will throw a code letting you know which one if you have the reader.

ps - Many owners don't seem to have experience with an engine running rough. There are a few reports here of owners thinking their transmission was going "south" only to find out months later, that the coils were causing the jerky "transmission" feel that they were getting. Also, one owner here, reported that he only replaced the spark plugs, not the coils, and his rough running engine returned to normal.

Twice two coils were replaced than one and 4weeks later another. They seem to come in two's for me.Only two more and I have a complete set. Some were asking about a failed coil a second time ,most of Ford parts are guaranteed for one year .Anyone know if a coil fails after the year ?

You guys need better Ford Dealers. A couple of months ago my 04 was running rough, took it to my dealer. They said it was the cops and did all eight. No problem

Re: Bad coils and only 10,000 miles.

I have a 2005 Thunderbird. Received a letter in 2006 from ford for a extended warranty on the coils for 10 yrs. or 100,000 miles. Car was running rough two weeks ago. Took it to dealer, replace four bad coils. Number two injector was not receiving signal from pcm module. Dealer ordered new pcm took six days to get. Installed it. Car runs perfect. Total for repairs $1550.00. $999.00 just for pcm with install. Coils covered under extended warranty from fords, needed to let dealer know of extended warranty wanted to charge me for repairs till I called ford customer service they called dealer when I was on the other line, dealer didn’t charge and knew that pcm is covered under emission warranty for 8 years or 80,000 miles. Got car fixed, no charge to me. Always best to call ford customer service before paying for any reapirs. Coils will be replaced as many times that need to be done until extended warranty runs out. I had a couple coils replaced free. Then another one went and I had to pay $50 under my extended warranty. Should I call the dealer about this or just leave it?
