  • HELP...I think detailer messed up my clearcoat

I tried searching but didn't find anything that fit....Today I took the Bird to a detailer as I had no idea what,if any, wax was on the car and how long it had been since it had been applied if there was. Prior to this, the paint looked great all one color, no streaks etc. Held fingerprints quite profoundly but it looked good.
When I picked up the car I was underwhelmed as I expected a little more shine. Later today, however, I almost broke down....Closer inspection showed dull streaks on the hood, fenders and trunk. Not swirl marks streaks as if wiped. Its obviously after 5pm so everything is closed. As some of you may know, I am by no means a paint and polish expert so I hoping for some help. I know its tough without seeing it but can anyone give me some hope that I just didn't pay to have some guy destroy my paint???
    Thanks,
    Kurt

I would suggest taking it back and talk to the guy (company) that done it soon in a sunny day to show that you are not satisfied...

Kurt, I don't know what you paid, or what all was supposed to be included, but, if you're not happy with the results...take it back to the business, and deal with the manager.

If he can't make you happy, ask to speak with the owner.

The paint on a car professionally detailed shouldn't have been brought out streaked and dull.

I am going back to the guy, but I want to know what the damage is before I do. I want to have the answers to the questions I ask him BEFORE I actually ask them. Going to a body shop tomorrow BEFORE I go back to the detailer. The manager is the owner. It's asmall shop, he's a decent guy, I just want to know what the damage is before I ask him to try to fix it and he makes it worse.

Re: HELP...I think detailer messed up my clearcoat

I just had our 56 T-Bird buffed out after painting it and found polishing compound on it. It looked dull so I when back and he cleaned it with 50-50 rubbing alcohol and water. Water alone will not soften the compound as I had tried to wash with water and it was still there.

Re: HELP...I think detailer messed up my clearcoat

I have to agree with Rex, it sounds like buffer trail from a power buffer. If too much pressure is put on a circular power buffer it will burn the paint and if so it may require a new paint job if it can't be buffed out to your satisfaction.

It would indicate that perhaps whoever did the work didn't know what they were doing.

Lets hope they can fix it.

Keep us posted on the outcome.

Having just entered the world of a circular buffer, using it on my F250 and watching probably 10 - 15 videos on YouTube I've learned that its pretty difficult to burn through the clear coat. They may be scuff marks which he should be able to get out.

Re: HELP...I think detailer messed up my clearcoat

EDIT: SAVED!!!!!!!!!!!!! went to MY body shop..I call it that now after going there this AM. Turns out it was just a bad wax job...looks like the guy left the wax on too long and left some behind. A little quick detailer spray and some microfiber towels and it looks WAY better. Boy this cleaning/shining thing is a learning process! Thanks for the help all!

As I lay awake last night mulling this over I came up with this question: one of the areas affected is a blotch on the leading edge of the hood, right where a rather large bug met its demise. Could the variation in color(with a clearer head I can describe the marks a little better)be from some sort of "bug and tar" remover that was some how wiped across the hood and trunk? thus removing what ever wax was there? Maybe my 'detail' didn't even involve a wax? I just thought he was that good at removing all the wax residue, maybe he didn't even wax it.....hmmm the body shop is almost open....the sun is out, maybe time for a ride.

Re: HELP...I think detailer messed up my clearcoat

Hey Kurt! As an owner of a TB Blue and a Torch Red I will offer my expierience: The TB Blue is almost dimensional" in appearance in that the paint seems to have a bit of "glimmer-flake" in the paint. I find it more dazzling; while the Torch Red is a bit more plain, well...just red. Used Turtle-wax once or twice until I learned that the product is not good on the clear-coat, so I bought my self some Nu Finish polish and Nu Finish detailer...and yes, if one is not careful to rub/wibe out the polish or detailer very well with a good micro-fiber cloth, there will be some darker/wetter looking blotches. Oh, and I all bought some of the Meguiar's products, but haven't tried them as of yet.

Glad I found out about these products before it was too late. My clear coats are still intact and the Nu Finish is working fine.

I think that was your best approach to the problem. You gave him a chance to make it right. Glad you are much happier now. FWIW, I have always and ONLY hand waxed my TBird. Buffer burn is a real possibility unless in the hands of seasoned professional detailer and that is no guarantee.

Thanks everyone!!! I am learning as I go.
Lindy, Thanks for the tips from a Torch red viewpoint. The detailer(product ,not person) I used worked magic. Thanks to all your tips I will NOT be putting the car's finish in anyone elses hands from here on out. Lesson learned! Kurt
