My yellow bird at 45000 miles has started to show its first coil problem. I am going to replace all 8 coils, boots and spark plugs my self.My questions are what after market parts are the best to use and have proven their quality,Has any body had any luck with ford covering a 2002.I would appreciate any info and help on this situation.

It seems everything is made in China even if it comes in a Ford box it probably all comes from the same supplier. The only difference is price.

As for Ford covering them on an 02? Can you whistle? Because that is what they will probably instruct you to go and do!

Drive it like you stole it !!!

Ford Dealership changed out 5 yesterday and 1 6 weeks ago. Total cost to me $0 due to Ford's extended coverage on COPs. I have 49K miles on my '05.

Mark, My only suggestion, as far as doing it your-self goes is, be sure you use a torque wrench when tightening in the new plugs. These cars have aluminum heads and an under or over tightened plug could blow out. A Ford Dealer should be able to tell you the Ft.Lbs. Good Luck! Leroy

            Re: questions on cops

It's starting to appear that all cop's should just be replaced at 45K miles just like the Trans fluid. Haven't heard of many lasting much longer

Ron, 70,000+ miles on Misty and no problem with COPS yet. When and IF I do I'll replace them myself.

It does get very hot under the hood on my 04 and when I come home and place the Bird in the garage I raise the hood to let out heat. Two questions:
                1) Could this elevated heat have an adverse effect on the life of the Cops?

                2) Would making the hood scoop functional help the heat problem?

                  Larryh,

I believe heat is the problem. In another tread someone removed the coil covers. Most cars have the coils exposed to the air, not burried inside the engine. I am also going to remove the coil covers. This may cause some more interference in the AM band of the radio.

A functional scoop would help out if the coils were visible.
