  • Stubborn brake dust

Howdy all, just wanted to pass on a successful method for cleaning brake dust from your chrome wheels.
I had neglected my chrome 7-spokes pretty badly and I thought the brake dust was permanently baked into my wheels.
After research, I tried super-fine steel wool (#0000) and some brasso: the wheels are like brand new. Nothing else could even touch the brake dust. This method makes it dissolve like paint would in mineral spirits with no scratching. Amazing!
If your wheels are as dirty as mine were, this will make you happy

Now that you have your wheels all bright and shinny it might be time to try a product call Wheel Wax (http://wheelwax.com/) or Michelin's brake dust repellent product.

Or, eliminate brake dust entirely and install ceramic brake pads.

Rick, I did that and haven't had a problem at all afterwards. I also did the same thing on my 500, that was worse the the Bird was before hand.

I also put ceramic pads on my car. They really help especially with whitewalls.

Well, if you don't want to go to the expense of buying ceramic pads, I have a maintenance suggestion. I use Meguiar's Quik Mist and Wipe Wheel Detailer between washings to keep the wheels clean and free of brake dust. Once a month, I apply a coat of WheelWax. The chrome wheels and tires on the Thunderbird make the car stand out better than best, especially when they are meticulously maintained.
