sub woofer

since I have up graded my stereo it is time to up grade the sub and amp I am thinking of putting it in behind the seats in the center where the thunderbird emblem is. I am thinking of cutting out a 10 inch round circle for the sub but i do not know what vis behind the plastic covering has anyone taken this out? thanks Tom

why not have a custom enclosuer built and mount on rear shelf inbetween the seats.
i would have a very hard time cuting a ten inch hole in my bird.

When I upgraded my system, I put the amp in the cubby hole in the trunk.

I have not measured that area but I am betting that location will interfer with the glass window and top when down.

If you pull all the trim off the curved panel behind the seats and remove the cloth top well cover you will see 1) that the panel is curved just like the trim and 2) the metal panel provides needed rigidity to the body. Thus cutting a 10” hole in the panel might not be advisable. Additionally, I do not think even one of the newer flat subs would fit – never tried it so not sure. I do know I have my amp mounted on the back side of the panel and the very limited distance between the metal panel and the header of the soft top when the top is down dictated what amp would fit. The window is not the issue for it tucks away, it is the header panel that you have to work around.

If not interested in placing the sub in the cubby you could investigate placing it under the shelf for there is room there for a sub BUT, you would still have to do some cutting and that piece too provides rigidity for the body that you might want to think about before doing.

If you pull out the factory subs (not easy to do) you might be able to fit an aftermarket sub in there place. However, the issue would be that all around the subs would be metal and thus maybe not conducive to sound you are after.

As a suggestion, remove the trim pieces and disconnect the top well fabric from the metal panel and you will see what space you have to work with and what might fit and where.

Both the door speakers and the rear speakers are 6x8. The factory speakers are actually smaller than that but they are mounted inside little enclosures.

The factory subs are 6x9's and are mounted on the front edge of the rear wheels.

With the soft top up, unclip the cloth cover over the top well and you can see what is there and how much space there is to work with. I think the metal part below the carpeted shelf is the most likely candidate for having enough room for a big sub. You would be compromising the strength of the cars frame if you cut it though.
