  • Woodward dream cruise-Free Press article

    HI all,
Check out www.freep.com and click on the future dream cruise classics....scroll through a couple and you will find....2002-2005 T-Bird.
Not a glowing headline for the T-Bird but nice just the same.

It's such a shame that with all the beautiful weather we've had, today of all days it rains for the cruise.

I got home at 3:30 p.m. today after doing the Bloomfield Twp Thunderbird and Superformance Shelby Show. Off and on, I think there were five retro birds and many 427 Shelby Cobras. Due to the weather forcast, I put the hard top on, since it was a top-up day anyway. Most of the Cobras were topless, with owners toughing out the weather. The highway was full of hot rods and classics as it is every year. Everyone should do Woodward at least one time in their life. Tomorrow the top comes off and it's clean up time for the Harper Cruise on Wednesday. Remember, Thunderbirds don't melt in the rain. Ed

Ed, it must have been a blast to see so many great looking cars cruising the highway.... one day I will take the Tbird to the Woodward cruise, it must be an experience like no other.

For now, I will enjoy the Detroit TV broadcast of the cruise starting at 7pm.

        Thanks for sharing.

The broadcast didn't do it justice! Drivers cruise at minimum the entire week prior to the official. It's fund to just fun to get a chair and watch the action.

Hard for words to describe the Dream Cruise. The scope and breadth of it is impossible to imagine, and must simply be experienced.

Only once,a few years ago, I took my '02 and cruised a little bit. That was fun. But the day really belongs to the older cars, so I usually drive over in my SUV, park a block off Woodward, and watch from the sidewalk (at 14 mile.)

I have had the opportunity to be in the Detroit area on two occasions when the cruise was going on. It is an incredible event and the times I was there the weather was wonderful for a Texas boy with temps only in the 80s.

With the current economic situation in the Detroit area and suspect the cruise is almost like Shirley Temple movies were during the depression – simply a chance to get away from reality for a few hours and have a reason to smile.

I do not remember the name of it but north or the GM Tech center there is, or was, a combo bowling alley and burger type joint that on Wednesday evenings had a huge car show. In additional to the local eye candy with wheels and legs, occasionally some of the folks from Chrysler and GM would show up with crazy creations built simply because they could. These were one offs and would never see a show circuit but fun to see none the less. Wish I had pics but do not but as an example, Chrysler 300 4WD with 2 blown HEMIs, 1 in the front and 1 in the back seat area. A Chevy Impala with the back cut out to be like a concept ElCamino, The Pontiac guys always had some fun stuff that was totally tricked out. I have not been to the Detroit area in about 3 years so I have no idea if this placed as survived the economic down turn or not or if they still have these shows.

Though wet this year, some said that it was bigger than ever. That's 40+thousand cars and more than one million spectators. I am in the process of getting a motel room on Woodward reserved for Thursday through Saturday night for next year's Dream Cruise The room comes with a view of Woodward and "private property" signs so those with rooms may sip their preferred beverage in the parking lot after cruising. The retro birds that were at the event this year drew some positive reactions, so I feel safe showing my bird. Cars that may not get approval are new forign models. Cars built here that are convertibles, collectables, or classics are welcomed by the hot rodders and Muscle Car folks. Almost everybody my age in this area has cruised and dragged on Woodward when we were kids, so we feel a kinship with each other. Ed
