  • When to replace tires?

Went on Discount Tires website today and browsed their information page.
    found this:

    • Vehicle Manufacturers Recommend Replacement at 6 Years
    • Tire Manufacturers' Warranties Expire at 6 Years
    • Tire Manufacturers Recommend Replacement at 10 Years
    • Industry Experts Recommend Replacement at 10 Years

of course, that's slightly out of context as they went on to explain further. I was looking for tread wear indication information but they seemed to skirt that on their site.

    Re: When to replace tires?

Guess I'm a little over due on my MGB. I put new Michelin's on it when I rebuilt the car. The tread still looks like new and no dry rot. That was over 20 yrs. ago.

      Re: When to replace tires?

Based on a recent experience, I will no longer assume that based on years my tires are still good.

I had a rim leak on a tire on my wifes car last week, and I took it to my local mechanic assuming the Aluminium rim needed grinding. He told me that the sidewall of the tire was badly dry rotted and should be replaced immediately. Being a little suspicious, I checked the receipts and the Goodyear tires were less than 3 years old and checking the date on the tire they had just been manufactured a month prior to purchase.

I went to "Just Tires" were they were purchased and brought the receipt just in case they could give me a little credit on the warranty. Without even looking at the tires the manager told me there was no coverage and tossed me the receipt. I called their headquarters to complain and apparently they are owned by Goodyear who they transfered me to. The very friendly woman told me the tire was absolutely covered for dry rot and asked if I would mind taking the car to NTB to have them inspected. I went there and they ended up covering over 50% of the total cost for 4 new tires under the warranty because apparently all 4 tires had dry rotted.

Moral of the story for me is I will no longer assume a tire is still good based on age and tread wear alone!

Did they have any explanation as to why it dry rotted so soon in its life?

We usually have to replace tires due to wear, not age.

I am like Dot I've only replaced tires due to wear. I do have someone look for dry sidewalls after they have been on the car for 6 yr's.

                Re: When to replace tires?

Dot, that's why I found it weird, I'm only familiar with dry rotting from tires sitting, this car was driven almost on a daily basis about 30K miles in 3 years. Everything I have read online suggests that maybe the tires were "old" when installed, but as I stated they were only 1 month old when installed.

Ford recommends replacing at 6 years old. I think this is a safety cusion after the Firestone mess, but I do plan on replacing mine at 10 years. I've seen lots old tires separate at the tread.

                  Other Tire Aging Developments:
Ford Motor Company added a 6-year tire replacement recommendation, regardless of tread wear, to its website and all 2006 owner’s manuals. DaimlerChrysler acknowledged it too will add a 6-year replacement recommendation.

                    Recommended Tire Replacements

Anyone have suggestions on tires. I need to get a new set and would like to improve the ride and reduce road noise. I am considering getting a set of Bridgestone Turanza Serenity 235/50-17.

                    Has anyone tried these?
Did they reduce road noise and/or improve the ride?
What tires have to changed to and been happier with?
Anyone know where to get narrow white wall tires?

                    Thanks-

                      Re: When to replace tires?

I replaced my continentals with Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500's about 3 months ago, about 2500 miles I like them the ride is comfortable and they handle a heck of a lot better. I got 235/55/17 as that size matches my speedometer with actual speed.

                          Re: When to replace tires?

On my '04, I just replaced my original, good appearing but dried out & hard Michelins at 32,000 miles with identical new Michelins: the ride is now much smoother & quieter.

I tried switching to same Michelins but in a 55 series: the wheelwells looked much fuller, but the higher sidewall turned the handling and cornering from a TBird to an LTD: too much wallowing!
