  • To chrome/ or not to chrome?

For several months I have been looking at pic's and reading about chrome accessories for the retro's. I have to admit most look really good and give them more of a retro look. But having bought my first car in the 50's and my first decent car in early 60's ( meaning more than $100.00 ) I got to thinking what I did and would do. A few hundred bucks bought a decent mid to late 50's car in early 60's. A lot of people, including me were turned off by the over abundance of chrome on late 50's so most of us de-chromed. Soon it became the less chrome the better. Side moldings hood and trunk latches and fender wells were always the first to go. Fortunately the T birds didn't have much and were pretty much left alone. Besides they really weren't that popular with the younger car guys of that era.
Needless to say I am still sitting here trying to decide what to do with my T-bird

My only mods were fender chrome and tailights .If I ever find the 5/8 chrome trim for the grill I may do that.

I too am generally turned off by an over-abundance of chrome. Lack of excessive chrome is one of the things that attracted me to my 1957 Tbird when I bought it back in December 1968. It is also one of the things I like about the 2002 to 2005 Retrobirds.

The only chrome bit I've added to my 2003 is the NM chrome scoop hood bezel, which matches the chrome hood scoop bezel on my 57. Other than that, I'm leaving my 2003 alone with respect to chrome add-ons.

As for your car, it's yours. Customize it any way you like to fit your taste and reflect your personality!

There are only a few things I wish the designers had done in brightwork when designing this car. A strip of chrome running on top of each door and around the convertible top well AND a factory installed chrome hood-scoop would have looked great. The Mini has the chrome around the passenger compartment/well and it looks wonderful-the TBird should have had it as well. BTW, I added the chrome hood-scoop and it really adds to the car. W/chrome additions-restraint is usually better in my opinion but to each their own!:)

These all pretty much appeal to me too. Also as in the 50's the color of the car is a big factor in how much chrome to use.

Of course what he means is the best mod AFTER the totally awesome extra horse-power bearing sleak and smooth Logo'ed Trunk Mat.

The car is PLAIN and after its chromed out, it's an eye catcher. My favorite color is CHROME. Just me. Next on my list are the 1 pc rocker panels

Those 1 piece SS rocker cover are the bomb. If I still had my car they would be placed on it in short order.

Ron, I have been having the same thoughts as you. With my silver bird I don't have the strong desire to add chrome but have purchased a luggage rack and plan on getting the trim at top of door and under hardtop.

My trunk (luggage) rack should arrive sometime next week. It should be a beautiful piece to add to my bird. The main reason is for additional luggage, because my trunk is full of car show supplies. Also, I may be traveling and it will come in handy on an extended trip. Ed
