  • COMMENT AT CAR SHOW

I attended a car show at a local Ford Dealer yesterday. Got many positive comments about my Bird but one really surprised me. A guy in his 50s said that Ford did a great job creating the retro Bird but should have put in a V8 instead of the 6 cyl. and it should have had rear wheel drive. He said they would have sold a lot more of them. After I told him that it did,he walked away scratching his head. Some people have no idea what's going on in this world.

It makes me wonder about the effectiveness of Ford's marketing.

Not a big deal, I was told the same thing by a salesman where I bought my Bird but a few years later when we picked up our new 500 from the same dealer. He had no clue. He wasn't with the dealership when the Birds were being sold so I would guess that's what a lot of people think.

The V-8 emblem on the 03s and the 04s helps to clear up that piece of mis-information.

There are also lots of lookers who believe that our retros were made by LINCOLN, or some foreign maker, or anything except FORD. I aim to do someting about that. By the time THUNDERSPIRITS happens at the end of the month, my Bird will have little blue domed FORD logos on both front fenders beneath the V-8 emblems. It took me a while to make that decision. But, it has bothered me for a long time, that no where on my BIRD does it say FORD. (Yes, I know there is a TINY logo on the light lenses).

I believe that I am the first to take this leap, and I hope that the members will be gentle with their comments. (Yes, I know - - you will want pictures and you will get them).

I've been trying to convince a neighbor for over 5 years that my Birds have V-8s. He constantly askes me why I have a V-8 emblem on a 6-cyl foreign job. This is the same jerk that parks a backhoe in his front yard (heh, heh, the city gave him a warning about that on Friday).

I had a Ford salesman tell me, when I asked what color the convertable top was on a Merlot TBird with the Hard top on, and he told me this model was a coupe, he had no idea the top came off. Leroy

Tom, my car has the large V8 emblem from the '55 T-Bird on both fenders and the guy still insited that the T-Birds came with a 6cyl. engine.

I have also had a few very interested comments that were incorrect. This underscores that the few that are actually seen on the road are somewhat of a mystery to most who aren't car nuts; it also makes it more than apparent they are still flying well under the popular information radar. Ford didn't do a stellar marketing job with this one.

Tom, I take pride in my Wixom sticker with the ford script on my Bird's windshield . That is enough for me!

Ditto ... And not everyone was fortunate to have those Wixom UAW stickers applied to our windshields. I don't know what I will do when the windshield eventually has to be replaced - I doubt you can peel it off.

Jim Youngs told many of us at Libba's Lake Lure event several years ago FoMoCo & the design team made a conscious decision not to place the blue oval on the exterior of the car after much debate: The idea was to exemplify the T-Bird as a halo trophy car held in higher esteem than the rest of the Ford line-up. There was actually a design mock-up and prototype of the trunk and front fascia wings to incorporate the Ford blue oval logo into the center of the wings: Thank God that idea was vetoed.

I personally am happy the blue oval logo was vetoed and the car only has the Thunderbird script and the wing logos but it is your car and if you want the blue ovals added go for it - Live & let live.

BTW, I also got told at the BP station I frequent that it was a shame Ford put a V6 in our Retros - the guy stood me down even with the V8 logos on the fenders so I popped the hood and showed him. Then the donkey said something along the lines of "well it must have been an option ..." I gave up at that point and made haste with a rather abrupt au revoir.

This post is 100% correct. I just purchased a Mazda 6 my friend was looking
                            it over and commented that it's a V6. I said no it's a 4 cylinder I explained
                            that Mazda 6 is a model and comes with either a 4 or 6 cylinder. I don't
consider him to be a stupid person.

Somebody please tell me what parking a backhoe on the front lawn has to
                            do with this thread?

Just proves that people who use backhoes as lawn ornaments are not the sharpest knife in ths drawer and should not be expected to understand the complexities of a T-Bird.
