  • Hard Tonneau . . .

A while back, one of the members was having a clean out sale on Merlot accessories. One of the items was this one piece tonneau. I wasn't too keen on it, but my SO pointed out that it was an excellent deal and probably would not happen again. So, I'm finally posting a pic and giving my thoughts.
    1. No way around it, it's a PIA. One more thing to store when not using, to clean when your are using, and to install and uninstall (however easy).
    2. Fit is good - but it still looks like an add-on. A good add on, but an an add-on, none the less. Looks like it sits on the car, instead of part of the car.
    3. It rattles - had to add rubber feet to keep it off the body.
    4. Got to plan ahead (something I'm not good at) and check weather. If you are out and about, there is no access to the top.
    5. No access to the shelf, either, while sitting. Never realized how many times I jump in the car and stuff things back there.
If you are thinking about one of these, think long and hard. I'm going to keep it a while and see how it plays out.

The magic words " I wasn't too keen on it"

You should have gone with your first instinct.

Not all tonneau covers are created equally. I have the Gary Kimmel two piece tonneau and do not have the same factors to deal with. It looks like its part of the car and does not sit on top of the deck. I can use the back cubby and my speakers are not blocked. it will also fit in the trunk with soft luggage. I also designed a custom upholstered cockpit with electric cooler. It is one of my favorite mods. More pictures in gallery

A lot better car and even more exclusive, but doesn't have the Cachet the Thunderbird had. Adios, mi Amigo.

Roger - Does yours reduce the distance you can put your seat back? In the pic, it appears that the headrest is against the padded back; but I can't tell how far the seat is back/reclined. It looks very nice on your car, but given my height, I need every inch of room.

The seat is all the way back to its limit. I added the padded areas to the tonneau surface.

I had a Powersport used one that I bought but found out how inconvenient it was. Pain to store, hope it didn't rain, need two people to handle it,fit was marginal & yes had to install rubber weather strip along the lower edge so it did not scratch the car.The real turn off was Powersports customer service, tried to get new hold-down straps, impossilble. Best thing I did was sell it! I still like the look of the car with the factory boot. If you like the tonneau thats great, what ever winds your watch is fine with me.

I like that too. Seems much more practical. How much to get one painted? I'd guess $5-6 hundred

I paid about $250 to have the 2 piece painted. The padded cockpit treatment was a very reasonable $150.

Yours looks to be a much nicer fit. However, I will say of the one piece design that the "legs" that go down the sides and down the middle to the console makes a nice surround for the seats.

I have a 2 piece hard tonneau and love the look. Mine is flat and rather than paint, had it covered in matching vinyl. Easily fits in trunk as well.

Does the two piece store in the trunk with out much trouble. The site does not show how the two pieces fit in the trunk.
