I recently purchased a 2005 T-Bird from a Florida seller. Now I have to either fly to Florida and drive it back to California or use the services of an auto tranport company. Does anyone have any experience with any of those companies good or bad? If you used one of those companies did you select open or closed tranport? Thank you in advance for your comments and recommendations.

Re: Experience With Auto Transporters
I used a Mayflower Van lines from MA to Ohio and Horseless carriage (antique car hauler) on the return trip for an antique wooden wagon - No problem
Two years ago I used a car hauler found on the web to move a car from Suffolk, VA tho MA and it didn't go well at all.
There's a lot of these guys out there, on the web, and they're mostly brokers hooking people up with independants, so you can't resolve issues. I won't do that again.
Go with the pros!

Re: Experience With Auto Transporters
We used an open carrier to move the Bird from VA to FL, the car was dirty when it arrived, but it cleaned right up when I took it through the car wash. Back to hand-washing it ever since. It's amazing how good the car looks after 8+ years. Waxing 1-2x per year has really paid off.PK- 2002 Premium Blue/Full Accent/Whisper White Top VIN#16336

I used DAS from OK to OH smooth move!
Pay the up charge for top rail, you don't know what may be dripping on it otherwise plus less chance of road debris being tossed up by truck tires.sigpic

Re: Experience With Auto Transporters
Adding this as a humerous antedote - - When I bought my '64 Rambler American, it was in Miami. I told the seller I would arrange for shipping. He told me he had a "friend" - $500 cash to my door. I wired the money and two days later a closed truck showed up out front. Mustang in front, Rambler behind. Unloaded and away they went. Best $500 I've ever spent.sigpic

I stand by my experience with Intercity Lines - Moondoggie was transported (enclosed and literally the white-glove treatment) from Sacramento, CA to Norfolk, VA in '07.

Re: Experience With Auto Transporters
I've had two cars transported both by Horseless Carriage. They move more than just vintage cars. No problems, each time the cars arrived on time and in perfect shape. And both times my unrestored, cars looked so sad in that prestine truck tucked in with new Lamborghinis, Austin Martins, Rolls Royces and Bentleys.

Re: Experience With Auto Transporters
Horseless Carrage has been around a long time and I have never heard a bad reprt other than pricey A closed truck would definately be better for that distance even if a little more. I used a guy out of Edgewater Fl for my mercedes from Penn. to fla, but the car was not a pristine show car and on open truck through stormy weather. The drivers before and after onspection report was very impressive. $500.00

Re: Experience With Auto Transporters
I just bought a new Backdraft (Cobra) from Connecticut and a Reliable owner-operator brought the car early. They're based in Orlando.
Enclosed shipping on a car with no top, shipped on top layer, was $1,300.
I got lucky with a shipper when I bought a 981 mile Grand Marquis in Atlanta at Dyer Vovlo for my parents Friday afternoon on Ebay and it was in Jonesboro, AR at 10 am Saturday. Shipping was free because it was the last one on and first off and they were coming through my hometown anyway.sigpicRussell

Re: Experience With Auto Transporters
I used Exotic when transporting my T-Bird from Florida to SoCal:

They're based in Orlando. I was 100% satisfied.
Used Reliable to ship it to New Jersey when I sold it to the buyer there. They were very professional too.
I wouldn't consider an open carrier for such a long journey, unless the car was a basket case.ScottyNeutron
