Re: Car and Driver Slams Our Birds

Sorry I opened this can of worms with my good neighbor in VA, he really did pay $55K for his Bird in late 2001 or early 2002. And I really did pay sticker for mine, I still have the receipt. I think I could have gotten it for a bit less, but I stood by my word. Here's the story.

July 19, 2002. We went to the dealership on a Friday afternoon. They had a $5,000 addl dealer markup on the sticker. They would not even let us test drive the car without a $5K deposit. I had already driven a co-worker's exact copy of the Bird I wanted and was totally smitten with the car, so the test drive was no big deal to me other than Judy hadn't gotten a ride in one. Judy was pissed. Those who know Judy know...well, you know LOL. The stock market had just slumped, they had about 5-6 Birds in their special building for great cars. They held firm on the $5K ADM. We held firm that we weren't paying it. We offered sticker. They wouldn't budge. We walked. As we were walking away, the sales mgr stopped us and said he would talk with the owner and let us know on Monday morning. He left a voice mail on Monday at work- Mr. Kutz, I talked to the owner, you have a deal, come on down and get your car. We came down that Wednesday evening. The sales guy they gave us slid a piece of paper across the table and said what do you want to pay for the car. I told him I offered sticker price for it last Saturday, and I would honor my offer. He almost didn't believe me. We had to convince him to start the paperwork. My word is worth more than saving a few hundred bucks. We paid sticker. $40,265 I think it was. It was well worth it.

Put me in the stupid category because I paid sticker for mine too: $40,985.00 plus $605.00 delivery/destination. I can't remember what tax, license, etc. was. I know some will say: "stupid is as stupid does", but I prefer: "stupid is the new smart."

I wish I could have afforded one new back then. But, mine was close to new over 7 years later.

Who amongst us can predict the future?

I'm sure nobody here bought a house just prior to the market tanking, right? (My daughter did.)

How's that workin' out for ya?

I did too! I've lost about 100k each year that I've owned my house.

              Still consider myself a winner.

Hmmm, C&D must have a burr under their saddle. They now have a sports car periodic table that neatly lays out where all the vehicles fit in. You can check it out at: http://www.caranddriver.com/features...s_cars-feature

You'll find Thunderbird in the poser classification.

To be honest, I really don't care about their chart or what anyone else paid for their car. I'm happy with my car, and satisfied with what I paid.

Re: Car and Driver Slams Our Birds

The T-Bird was never designed from day one as a sports car. It was marketed as a personal luxury car spurring GM to enter the market with such ionic beautifully designed competitor (IMHO) as the Buick Riviera.

As many of the old timers have heard me state whenever this diahreaa shows up in print from time to time "opinions are like a**h*les: Everbody has one so consider the source. This magazine has never driven or rated a BMW or Audi they did salvate or kiss the rear of so the premium segment European bias is quite obvious. They are now taking pot shots at Lexus which is one of the most pleasurable and comfortable autos I have driven not to mention their near uniform 5 star customer service. If it didn't pay a German export tariff then it already is 2 legs down with crowd - Just sayin' & JMO.

Perfect, John...although a nice lil '38 being shot in ones directions would be more realistic for me (like this ) yours is *very* doable....

                              thanks pal!

The only thing a car is wporth is what you'll take and what somebody will pay. I our case there are manyvariables that enter into it. I have bought many things that I had a reason to want bad enough to pay nore than it was worth. I was hesitant about the T-Birds when new but think those that bought new will do just fine. Future car values is moore like a lotto ticket than an investment, but the car still has residual value
