WOW, glad you're ok. That looks loke a run flat tire that had a total separation. What brand was it?

Glad your OK. From what I can see if you look real close I think I can see a word that says YEAR, you only get one guess as to what kind of tire it was.

Same thing happened to me with Bridgestones on my Maxima at 70 MPH. It was the rear tire and I really fishtaled like crazy! Luckily, there was no one next to me!

I've been driving for fifty-five years and never had a blowout.I'm thinking if the time
comes when it happens I'll know what to do. Thought to myself on how I'd handle the
situation.Well found the correct procedure and I was clueless.I'm sure there are many
of you in the same position as I am so do your self a favor and check it out. I would
have liked to have added a link to one those sites but I must admit I don't how to. So
if someone can do that I think it would be a great service to many.

I don't want to have the experience of having this happen to me...

The worst thing with tires when driving was the steel belts breaking, don't buy General tires back then, learned twice on that one. When they blew, car starts shaking bad, and that was bad enough...

Re: Results of blowout at 70 mph

The tires on the car now are the second set. First set lasted 46,000 miles. This set was bought in June of 2007. 76,000 miles on car now. There was no explosion just a rapid lost of air. The tire looks like it has a puncture in it--but there was nothing in the tire. The tire dealer thinks the rim is ok. Could not see or feel any damage. I think the rim shreaded the tire after driving on it with no air in tire. Was able to stop before any damage was done to rim. I will find out when dealer removes the sidewall from rim.

                    Did I miss this somehow?
Could you PLEASE tell us what sort of tire it was?

                    Thanks!

"Second set ... first set ... this set." Some of us are a tad confused here, Roy, but for obvious reasons we're very interested. From what you've posted, I gather that the tire that failed was one of a set of 4 that was bought 3.5 years ago (June 2007) & had a little over 30,000 miles on it. If so, this tire gave out rather early. Any more details?

I always suspect a "rapid loss of air" is caused by a valve stem failure. We always replace valve stems when we changed tires. Always.

A nail cannot cause rapid air loss in a modern tire. A "slice" from a piece of metal sure can.

I would focus on the valve stem.

The tires that are on the car now are Goodyear Eagle LS. Same size as original tires.
