  • Results of blowout at 70 mph

I had a blowout while going home from CPA's office this afternoon. I was doing 70 mph on interstate in far left lane when all H*** broke out. Right front tire deflated. Complete lost of air. It was fun getting car off onto shoulder. Lucky the shoulder was real wide and paved. Attached are photos of what is left of tire. 100_2140 (Small).JPG

No damage to car. Highway patrol came by before I had a chance to change the tire. He tried to direct traffic but he was not very successfull. He was kind of mad. People were not moving out the that lane. His floor jack would not fit under the Bird. So I had to use the jack that came with car. It barely fit under the car.

After I got home, went to get a replacement tire. I have a little over 30,000 miles on them. Thread was over half way gone, so I had to get either two or replace all four. Decided to get four. It will take 3 to 5 days for tires to arrive.

      Roy,

Glad you are okay. I bet you were fighting that car like crazy to get it slowed down and to the side of the road.

Were your tires OEM? Do you think you hit something or was it tire failure? What did you order that will take that long to get in a metropolitan area or did you rder them on line?

Am I seeing correctly. By looking at the photos it seems you had no rim damage. Was it an actual instant "Blow Out"? (explosion) or a rapid loss of air?

              Glad you are OK.

Seven year old tires will do that. get four new ones.

I'm glad to see you and your Tbird are OK...

I think this is just another reminder to replace tires when reaching 5 or 6 years old, no matter the tread thickness left...

                  Boy howdy. Good advice.
It could have been a rear tire which in my experience is even more dangerous.

Glad to hear you are safe Roy. Good drivership btw to bring the car safe onto shoulder.

Had a similar thing happen to me with the '78 Eldorado a few months ago, while driving 65 mph in the left lane. I was lucky it was one of the rear tires. If it had been one on the front.. with that heavy boat I would have ended up in the crash barrier.

Is this an original tire? What was the date code on the tire (s)?

Wow, terrible looking! I'm so glad you weren't hurt! Can you tell us what sort of tires they were and/or what you think might have caused the sudden loss of pressure?
