  • American Pickers 12/20/10

Did anyone else see this last night on the History Channel? The hosts visited a RR station where the owner accumulated 60 cars, 30 of them TBirds. The ones I was quickly able to pick out were early 60's bullet and flair birds. I think it was in Pennsylvania.

Anyway the little blurb stated the TBirds were designed to compete with the Corvette. So much for historical accuracy.

Yes I saw the episode. He bought most on EBay and wanted EBay prices.

I saw a promo for it and tuned in just for the car segment. As usual, they glossed over it and focused on the who-cares-stupid Italian trunk. That tall guy annoys me no end, short guy just gets on my nerves.

Another little "blurp" He immediately asked two designers in his studio Bill Boyer and Damon Woods to come up with Fords answer to the Corvette.
Based on that their statement is historically correct.

As far as the show goes most of the rusty crap they pick up isn't worth
        two cents.

You need to go to a "Shacks" event in Clarksdale, MS my friend. It's like staying in the American Pickers Motel.

The more I watch that show the more " staged and rehearsed " I realized it is. Total up what they say they will get for a days pick and figure out how to guys traveling thousands of mles in a truck with an employee back home can live on it.

Keep in mind that this is a television show and they get paid nicely for performing and entertaining a large audience. (at least $10,000 each per episode plus expenses and residual payments for re-runs) Most shows tape 26 weeks a season. Comes to an excess of $300,000 per season and the shows will have a five year re-run life.

Ron, I am with you and believe all the 'reality' shows are staged. They have to be to get the right camera shots, and yes the 'stars' of those shows are paid. I don't watch many of them but I do like Pickers and Pawn Stars. All in all, though, I'd prefer a football game or NCIS.

I like the Pickkers show only becasue I get a kick out of the people they run into. Staged or not some are real odd characters. I also like to see the areas they travel to. Some of the places, the small communities are very pretty, looking like great places to take a T-Bird cruise.

I like the show, staged or not. I like a lot of the things they find. I did a little of this when looking for things to fill my Tiki Bar room while still living up north.

As for people getting on my nerves..........this happens all the time but I don't let it bother me and just move on. No reason to bit-h about it.

Tea ,,, I like the show too just for the concept and the people they buy from. I suspect that they are under pressure to not make a killing on everything as all the junk in America would be over-priced,, kinda like what Barrett Jackson did to old car matket. Old by itself doesn't make something valuable or I'd be wotyh a mint :- )

I love Pickers and Pawn Stars too. It's the people they meet that is so interesting. I saw the Tbird show this week, and agree they didn't spend enough time on the cars. I wish Wayne Carini's Chasing Classic Cars would have found that collection, it would have been more informative. In my current Hemmings Classic Car magazine, the cover story is on the "boxy four seater" 58 to 60 Tbirds. Very well done.
