My temperature is showing overheating but the engine is not. The engine switches into engine protection mode but after cutting the car off and then back on its back to normal. I was told the tempeture sensor valve needs to be replaced. Has anyone had this problem?

You may have an air bubble, try running the motor with the cap off the fill spout. You may burp the cooling system and clear the problem.Birds of the 4815AGAIN has been in 48 States and 9 Canadian Provinces. Travelled many miles with great friends-- "Priceless"

I had a similar problem about 7-months ago and it turned out to be the thermostat. I took it to the dealer (actually had it taken on a flatbed) and it was replaced. The part was reasonably priced but the labor charge was ridiculous. Apparently it takes quite a bit of time to access the part. $900.00 later, I had the car back.

It could be either of the above. I see you have an 02 and they were known for this back in the early years because of bad hydraulic fans. If your fan was never replaced then this could be another possible problem. Mine acted like this off and on for a short period before it went out altogether.They are Here. Thanks Guys, Im gonna try all suggestion....I assumed it may be the thermostat however the car doesnt overheat. I purchased two sensors, however,like Lasuviodaboy said, the labor is the most expensive issue to deal with because the sensor is in the head. If all else fails, then the sensor replacement is my final option. BTW....Thanks 007 Cruiser!EnjoyLifein Style.....!

Ok...I tried the technique 15Again suggested and it appears it worked. So far the engine has been running normal and the temp has yet to elevate. The engine actually ran hot when I removed the coolant cap to release the pressure, but after adding water, it cooled down to normal. I havent had any problems soo far. It may be too early, but as of now, that was the least expensive solution ever!!!! Thanks 15AGAIN!!!!
As far as the code TBYRDY... the code identified the temp sensor which is located inside the head...the cost to replace...$16 for the sensor and $500.00 for labor.EnjoyLifein Style.....!

Heres my dilemma.
The car runs great and the temp. needle is right in the middle and stays there once warmed up.
Again after driving 20 miles round trip I notice the fan is howling when I bring it in the garage and the engine bay seems hot.
Today I let the car idle in the garage; needle came up to the middle and no noise prob. because it had idled for 1/2 hr. and the engine bay was not as hot as last night after driving.
I took a flashlight and don't notice the fan blade moving. At least it looks like the plastic blades behind the shroud. Doesn't it move/ rotate all of the time?
All belts and pulleys that I could see were moving fine.
Any suggestions other than taking it in or is this normal?

Your fan should only run when needed. At idle it won't get near as hot compaired to driving. These cars are all very hot under the hood when they are driving on the road. Never showed overheating on the gauge, just a loud running fan when pulling into the garage.
I burped the coolant container as folks mentioned, added water and took it to Autozone for a free computer reading which came up with nothing wrong.
I'll keep on eye/ ear on it.
