Re: Driving in the Fast Lane

Did 120 mph twice in my life.

First, (1961) after hitting the bars in NY State (drinking was OK at age 18; 21 in NJ), two buddies and I were coming home down the Palisades Interstate Parkway in my 1957 Olds 98 convertible.

They conked out from the alcohol, I decided to floor her (with the top down).

At 120 (on the speedo), they were wide awake.

Second, after a date, at about 2 AM in the morning on the NJ Tpke going from North Jersey to Dover AF Base to see a friend of mine in my one year old 65 Corvette, I decided to nail her.

With a 3.08 rear and 15" tires, top end was great, but acceleration suffered.

Anyway, I got a real sudden jolt when I suddenly ran into an early morning fogbank at 120 mph.

From then on, I concentrated on drag racing, not top speed.

Re: Driving in the Fast Lane

While in Nevada, driving back home from Detroit Thunder in 2007 in our 2002 T-Bird "Blackie", we decided to take US-50, "The Loneliest Highway in America", over to Fallon, NV.

So, at Battle Mountain, NV, we headed south on NV305, a two-lane state highway, which is about 86 miles in length. We started out slow at about 70 to 75 MPH because I didn't know the road. Well, we did the 86 miles in one hour. Not much to talk about there. But, since we started slow, we were doing over 100 MPH continuously in several sections along the route.

During that leg of the trip, we only saw 30 vehicles coming the other way on NV305. Thank Goodness!

"Blackie" got a workout on that leg of the trip!

Re: Driving in the Fast Lane

Was cleaning my '50 Ford Coupe one morning when the next door neighbor, a trooper, asked what I had under the hood. . I showed him, just a little V8. He asked if anyone else had a similar car and I told about a friend's '51 Merc. He said to tell him he was going 125 through radar the other night and to slow down before he got killed. I know that he knew it was me...I'm sure the expression on my face did all the talking. Haven't been that fast since, except when working.

Re: Driving in the Fast Lane

Just hanging out my senior year with a buddy at the local Drive-in and spotted this cute sophomore driving her big brother's 427 Vette convertable. Talked her in to letting me take it for a spin so put $1.OO in the tank and took it to the longest straight-a-way I could find. With her sitting on the console between my buddy and me, I shifted into 4th gear at 90 and our heads still snapped back when I floored it. When I looked in the rear view mirror all I could see was the panic in this girls eyes so I slowed down after about 110. Never ridden in a car that fast since then..It was 1968.. Glad I lived to tell about it..Hope my kids don't read this..
