  • How Do I Remove This Center Console Panel?

    Hi Guys and Girls:

On the center console of my '02 T-Bird, just below the switch for the electric top, there is a fixed panel. Does anyone know what this panel is for, what is behind it and, more importantly, how I remove it?

I was thinking of using it to mount accessory switches.

    Thanks - Roger

It is used in later models for the seat heater switches. It just pops out. There are special tools to get behind it and pull it straight out. You can do it with a very thin screwdriver.

There is nothing behind it. It is a false panel in the '02's.

What David said. And, that panel is a good place to mount switches or something. Check for clearance behind it first though.

I use a very wide putty knife/scrapper. By gently pushing it into the space between the dash and the panel you can depress the release springs (2 I think). Ford sells a tool for it as well. You have to be careful just pulling them without releasing the spring, I tried that once on an AC vent and it cracked.

If anyone is still monitoring this thread, is there a source for acquiring these dash panel components? The "false" panel comes out on my 03 just fine, but the panel above it (the panel holding the auxiliary power, cigar lighter, top up/down switch) has broken in the areas where it is fastened to the car. Would like to see if I could buy this panel piece separately--right now I'm busy with plastic and epoxy trying to rebuild it . . . . .

            Did you try the dealer?

Also if you buy a dash kit I think they have a panel that might cover it.

I was able to remove the broken panel and repair it with multiple applications of epoxy and manufaturing some mounting points where the screws hold the bottom of the piece. From what I can tell the dealer no longer has such parts. I did find a source (by searching on TBN) where a company (parts.com) has such panels. The cost of the panel I'm seeking is $50--ouch!
