  • Anyone Managed to Repair Scratches on Bumper?

    Hi Guys and Gals:

I have a tiny scratch on the back bumper that I would like to remove. It is very tiny but I see it!!!

Apart from a professional repair, which is not justified, I was hoping someone could give me tips on removing the mark from the plastic?

I assume the bumper is painted, rather than colored all the way through??

    Thanks for all suggestions....

Roger, it all depends if your scratch has gone through the base coat (and yes, the bumpers are painted). Tbird blue is a fussy colour to do touch-up, but if you have only scratched the clear coat layer, there are many products on the market to "cover" the clear coat layer scratch. I use a Zaino product which works wonders.

But if the scratch is deep enough, you need to blend the paint which is a real art. Using a touch up paint is difficult for blending, you may need a professional body shop for an acceptable job. Trouble is that when you know the scratch is there, you will always be looking for it so you end up doing something to fix it just to clear your head. Been there, done that on many cars.

I suggest you start with this thread and see if it might apply to your situation.

Try the "SIMONIZ CLEAR COAT SCRATCH REPAIR, FILLER & SEALER". It was advertised on TV for quite a while. It does really work, comes in what looks like a ball-point pen with a pocket clip. You have to follow the directions on it carefully.............P.S. It's available in all the auto parts stores-

You might want to contact these people http://www.drcolorchip.com/.
I have a friend who used this on his '08 Jaguar for some pretty severe paint chips and it did a beautiful job. They advertise for paint chip repair but they have some letters from satified users who used it on scratches. The have all of the '02 colors (I checked).

If you can catch the scratch with your fingernail, then it's too deep to buff out and will need something more professional. If you can't feel it with your fingernail, you should be able to buff it out. I've had good luck with Meguiar's Scratch X.

Too bad it's the rear bumper or you could do what I did, put the Ford bra on and left it on!

X2 on the Dr.Colorchip. I just got done touching up some spots on my merlot.
They look perfect. Hands down the best touchup product I have used.

For light scratches, I've used Nu Finish Scratch Doctor with pretty good results. From my experience with it, it conceals most light scratches fairly well. Makes any scratch a lot less noticeable. Most people would probably not notice it any further unless you told them it was there and they got really close to look at it.

I've also used the touch-up paints in the past. Based on that experience, it's failrly easy for an amateur to touch up small chips or scratches on non-metallic colors like white, black, and red with satisfactory results. I've never really been very satisfied with the results on metallic paints though. Sometimes the scratch was less noticeble than the touch-up.

Not with the Dr.Colorchip. I am serious. Every little nick I touched up
came out perfect or very close to perfect. Watch the video on their website.
No blobs, the color was a perfect match to my metalic Merlot and if you have
deep nicks, you can apply multiple times to build it up. Not much of a learning curve either. I don't endorse a lot of stuff but this is one product I will buy again.

I looked at their kits and they sell about 1/2 oz of paint and 2 oz of solution in the basic kit. That is not much material. They claim it will repair about 12 chips. How much of that did you use for your repair?

When watching their demo video I would say 90% of the paint is wasted. Just be more conservative on application of paint to the ding and you should get twice as much coverage from the kit.

I am very thankful for a lead and your endorsement, as I've got a scratch on my back bumper that BUGS THE CRUD outta me! Everytime I walk in the garage, I want to scream. It isn't deep, but is annoying. I also have a few more dingies and scratches on my '07 Prius (my daily drive) and they should be repaired too, so TWO kits are coming my way!
CatBrd2 is the new license tag! Meowgal was moved to the Prius.
