  • Push-Button Automatic Door Unlock Feature

While looking at a used MSG Bird on Ebay, I came across this unusual feature, a Ford push-buttom automatic door unlock feature mounted near the rear license plate. That is an option (not officially offered by Ford) I have never seen before in this location.

    Enjoy!

These were and still are offered by Ford, for the Thunderbird, as a dealer installed or owner installed, it's up to the individual where they place them. They are programed just like a new key fob, then you can set / select your own numeric combination. I've seen some who mounted them on the black trim at the bottom of the windshield. I have a loose leaf manual that Ford issued to it's dealers so the salesmen could learn of the features on the Thunderbird, the last page had listed several dealer installed options, remote start, keyless entry and dimming mirror were three offered.

I keep saying I'm going to do this on the Bird.Great feature had it on my Sable and Lincoln .With two cars and living in a condo you always need to get something out of the other car and you have one set of keys on you .About $85.00 If I remember correct from Ford.

I'm trying tp attach a larger pic, it's always hit or miss with me attaching a photo. Maybe a little bigger. Click on photo, it opens bigger to see. also, when I was looking into them, they came with 2 covers, one black grained and one smooth to paint to match car.

That came on my 500. Never used it and didn't even look up the code for it. Just seems like a waste to me. They were nice when they first came out but even then were just a pain. It was on all my other Birds.

I've always thought it odd that even though there are 10 numbers, there are only 5 buttons. That really seems to limit the unique code possibilities.

James, Not really, you can program them for any number you would like. You just hit the button twice for the other number.

If I remember correctly, each button you press either once or twice depending on if your wanting the first or second # on that button. Its appeal to me was living at the beach, I could leave keys, in car or trunk and avoid the possibility of loosing keys in sand or getting them stolen. You can unlock 1 door, both doors or trunk with your code, after entering code, enter another # for door, trunk. Have family with this feature and they love it. Older Aunts constantly locking keys in their Mercury Marquis. It's still something I consider from time to time. Can have a spare key locked in trunk if I'm traveling and loose keys, accidentally lock keys in car, open and back on the road. This thread is making me consider it all over again.

Thanks for an interesting bit of knowledge. If my Ford dealer can do it, I may have him install one for me. Incidently, it's the same as on my motor home and I use it all the time.

Is it a battery powered wireless unit?

This is a video of the keyless pad. When the cover is painted, it's really not that bad. Added a second link with written installation instructions

I have one on my bird. Don't know the code, however. Bought my 02 last year. Don't know how to find the code. My radio guy said for $75 he could figure it out.
