maintenance question

    maintenance question

    So Ford has a bunch of scheduled maintenance things that they suggest to do...

    For example, last time I brought my bird in they suggested the following:
    air filter - 39.95
    fuel filter - 79.95
    injector flushed - 139
    throttle body - 89
    clean out intake - 139

    What do you all do? Do you do everything that the manual suggests? For what it's worth I have an 04 bird with the ford ESP... it's my every day car with about 37k on it.

    Go by the owners manual for scheduling. The dealers pad their books with unnecessary service items.

        All I'd do is change the cabin air filter.
        Unbelivable TBN trips including ALL of the lower 48 States plus 9 Canadian Provinces, 8 European Countries, 3 Caribbean Countries, Countless National Parks and have attended well over 100 TBN Events since 2001 and counting. Best of all ... fabulous friends.

          I do a little more than David. I change the cabin filter and the oil filter. Think I will have the coolant changed before we go to Texas. Possibly next will be change transmission fluid.

            Change the air filter and fuel filter. The rest is just a nonsense dealer rip-off!

              I have 115,000 miles
              Changed fuel filter at around 90,000
              rear end service at 95,000
              coolent flushed 100,000
              transmission flushed100,000
              gas service 100,000
              flushed brakes 100,000
              changed oil and filter every 5,000
              cabin air filter 15 to 25,000
              Birds of the 48
              15AGAIN has been in 48 States and 9 Canadian Provinces. Travelled many miles with great friends-- "Priceless"

                With only 37K you shouldn't need the injectors flushed or intake and throtle body cleaned. Air and oil filters are the most important; fuel filter can wait. My dealer suggested that I have the injectors cleaned and the "Motor Vac Service" which is some type of cleaner for the intake and throttle body and they also changed the fuel filter. This was at 55K and I didn't notice any difference in power or fuel economy after the service so I feel it wasn't worth the expense.

                  SCAM! Dealer add-ons that add pure profit to their bottom line. I get the same line from my Chrysler dealer, too!

                  Change the cabin filter to prevent moldy smells every 20,000-30,000 miles. Mine was a filty mess at 30,000!

                  Changing the air filter at 30,000 is not a bad idea.

                  Ford recommends the fuel filter be changed every 30,000 miles? Is this correct...if so, I need to do mine this Spring!!

                  The rest, for a 37,000 mile car...is a waste of money.

                  Of course, your opinion may vary....

                    We neglected to change our fuel filter until at 100K miles. The dealer's service man was shocked that the old fuel filter weighed less than the new filter. In otherwords, our old fuel filter was still clean. guess we used good clean fuels during that time.

                      I have been having "cop symptoms" but no firm code for which one. There are a multitude of "other possibilities" I'm starting with the fuel filter at 58K miles.

                        I changed my own cabin filter - good instructions here on the nest - and if I remember correctly the filter was about $17.00 (Auto Zone I think) and took about 10 minutes. Seems Ford wanted about $40.00

                        Agree the main thing is to keep the oil clean - They chagned my antifreeze when I had the heater control replaced last summer.

                          Air filter has been changed... oil and oil filter taken care of as well. Thanks for the advice. Saved me a bundle.

                            One thing that I found critical on all Ford products is transmission service at around 50K miles. It is amaizing the difference it makes. Other services all seem to have variables that can effect the frequency.
