  • Hood Composition

Does anybody know the composition of 02 to 05 the Hood. Looks to me like a fiberglass bottom/shell. What is the upper material?

I believe the material is SMC (sheet moulded compound) same as Corvette. The fenders and decklid and hardtop are as well.

No carbon fiber in our T-Birds.

R U sure? I think the bird is too heavy to be fiberglass.

Here is more info on SMC

              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheet_moulding_compound

Try sticking a magnet to the car, won't work except for the doors.

Here is what Ford writes about the car in the dealer binder:
'Lightweight components: The hood, front fenders, decklid and rear finish panel are constructed of Sheet Moulded Compound (SMC). Front and rear facias are made of thermal polyfenin, and extensive use of aluminium components help reduce overall vehicle weight.'

Rear fenders are also sheet metal.

To confirm, I got my handy refrigerator magnet last night and went around the Bird, testing what is ferrous metal and what is not. Hood, front fenders, rear deck lid (trunk) aren't metal.
Doors and rear fenders are--wouldn't give my magnet back easily. Also showing some
metallic character are the chrome windshield trims and chevron chromed stripes.

Did you check the rocker pannels?
