  • Cyclo Orbital Polisher

Recently I noticed some swirl marks in my paint. They are particularly visible in the bright sunlight.

Last month I saw a YouTube video demonstrating the Cyclo Orbital Polisher removing swirl marks. The polisher has two counter-rotating heads.

Members here seem to have a wealth of knowledge about machine polishers. I have been reluctant to try one, but I think now is the time to begin. I researched various options and the best seems to be the Cyclo.

Has anyone used the Cyclo Orbital Polisher for removing swirl marks? If so, what were the results?

I appreciate being able to ask this and look forward to any assistance you can give me. Thanks in advance.

For what you will be spending on the polisher and supplies do yourself a favor and
take the car to a pro. I have the same problem on my black T-Bird swirl marks can
drive you crazy now you see them now you don't depends on the lighting. Which ever
    route you take good luck.
Just curious anyone out there with a dark color who doesn't have swirl marks?

      Re: Cyclo Orbital Polisher

I just bit the bullet and bought a Meguiars Dual Action Polisher (G110v2) and used Mequiars products to polish and wax mine. I had minor swirl marks so I used a swirl remover, then the polish and then wax. Did a great job removing existing swirls and did not create any new swirl patterns as many of the units can.
Historically I have gone to the pros also but I still find some swirls after they get done. I decided to try this myself and was very pleased with the results.

Thanks, Paul. I am encouraged by your results.

Going to the pros can get expensive, if you want to maintain the car's appearance long term. Besides, I like detailing it myself. I find it very relaxing.

Side note....I have not used the dual head arrangement but I know I would not like it. Might work for very large area but would be impossible to use effectively in smaller areas.

            Re: Cyclo Orbital Polisher

Most car freaks use the Porter Cable orbital buffer at the Vette, Mercedes, GTR, etc forums.

My suggestion is much like John's. Let a pro do it. ask around among the Vette, Porshe car clubs....

Get it done every now and then if you have black. It's part of "the Black experience"....

In between you can get stuff like Zaino's Z5 polish. It hides" minor swirls.

              Re: Cyclo Orbital Polisher

              I like the Cyclo.

It is a great little machine and they are pretty much indestructible.

I found two on ebay and got them both for less than $100.00.

You can get parts for them (polishing heads and the like) from many suppliers.

From what I have found, most of the professional polishers use them because the two heads are easier to control and they lessen the possibility of "burning" the paint.

Go to Autogeek.net check out the forum and you will find out all you need to know related to DA (dual action) polishers.I have a Griots model and the Porter Cable also get great reviews. They do have a new Meguires pad/polish system that would probably be the way to go.
                Warning,their products do get addicting.

                  Re: Cyclo Orbital Polisher

I want to report back on my experience with the Cyclo Orbital Polisher.

My Cyclo polisher arrived from Autogeek.net last Friday. I ordered the Mega Cyclo kit for $329.00, which included the Cyclo, pad holders and an assortment of pads. I also purchased a bottle of Wolfgang 3.0 Total Swirl Remover.

First, I washed the car with Zaino Z-7 Show Car Wash, then I followed the wash with the Z-18 claybar. When the paint was perfectly clean and smooth, I used the Cyclo with the Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover. I did a small section of the car at a time.

Lastly, I applied two coats of Z-5 Pro Show Car Polish. A wipe with Z-8 Grand Finale Spray Seal finished the job.

The result was a show car shine free of swirl marks. The car looked like it did when I drove it off the showroom floor back in 2001. I was afraid to use a rotary polisher, because of the possibility of permanent paint damage. But the Cyclo is better than a rotary polisher for removing swirl marks. The dual orbital heads don't move fast enough to burn the paint. It even polished the plastic headlights and removed the yellow haze that had begun to discolor them.

I can recommend the Cyclo without reservation. Give it a try. It is well worth the money.

                      Re: Cyclo Orbital Polisher

That is a lot of work! Not to mention the cost. I have had a deep forest green Mustang, a black Cobra Mustang, a 40th Anniversary Corvette, ruby red on ruby red, and never went to a lot of trouble to get my cars to win trophies in local shows. All of these cars, including Tweety, are show quality. I just rub a little and then rub a little more, all by hand. What I am saying is that, if your baby is a daily driver, don't kill yourself trying for perfection. If you can afford a pro job, get it done. If you love to shine your car, do it. But don't get too crazy. No matter how good your shine is, somebody will have a better looking shine. I use Maquire's products exclusively. I wash it in March and wax it, if I can, after the wash. The rest of the season, I spritz it with Maquire's Detailer. Mary does the wheels and tires. We do a little dusting in the interior, and a little rubbing on the seats and dash, and then we have fun with our Tweety Bird.
Remember to have fun with your bird first. Then when you have some time, pick at it. I knew of a guy that had a 66" Shelby and had to sell it because he would sit up every night babysitting it in his garage. It was either his mind, or the car! Make sure you are having fun with that wonderful car of yours. Enjoy your beatiful Bird, and, please don't drive yourself crazy with the details. Ed
