  • NASCAR at the Glen

This weekend NASCAR is at Watkins Glen. Sure brings back some great memories from back in 2002 when we got to run the track with a large group of Thunderbirds. Ford also braught out a brand new '03 for us to admire and join in our cruises.

    some pictures:

1 - Coming accross the start line.

2 - With our '66 in line (did not have a retro Bird yet)

3 - Some of the members really getting in to the 'racing mood'

It was a great day and one to remember John. When we first got to Watkins Glen (the town) , we went to the historic race museum and watched some history of the Glen . Next we toured the country side which was the original track for the Watkins Glen races 'back in the day' before the present track was built. Then we went to the track where we watched some trials (laps) by some older race cars that must have been racing that weekend. Got to see them later in and around the pits / garages. Once that was over , we were lined up and slowly worked our way around the track with a pace car/truck leading us. After a few of these, the pace picked up and they were not holding us back too much. (Still have my wifes finger nail marks in my arm). It really was a hoot. It was neck in neck with a '83 Bird, side by side, the last time we crossed the finish line. (We still laugh about that when we meet some times at various functions)
Then we lined them up for pictures etc. Yes, Would do it again in a heartbeat. This time with our '007.

Picture one ; when we entered the Glen track.

picture two; lining up the cars.

picture three ; starting out slow.

Thanks for the added photos and narrative. As I said before had to be a fun day.
Not many viewers on this thread as compared to tail light bezels makes you wonder.
Changing the title to Thunderbirds at the Glen might spark more interest.

P.S. Don't think there will be to much racing going on there due to the rain.

            Re: NASCAR at the Glen

Back in the mid 80's my best friend use to run SCCA races, using an MGB, and a few were at the Glen. Myself and a couple other guys did his pit work and timing for him. Judy and I even rode bicycles around the track in the evening when they weren't racing. We didn't go down into the boot because we would have had to walk the bikes back up the hill out of the boot. We camped out using my 1978 Ford Super Van.
Had a lot of fun on these trips.

Checked the radar and it looks like this race may have to wait till tomorrow.

I've heard tales of how in years bone by you did not want to be a part of the group of folks who hung out in the "Boot". Kinda like the infield at Atlanta or Talladega back in the 60's. If you were not passed out and knew who won the race while in the infield then you didn't have a good enough time.

Also, that sort of explains which is the "boot' and which
is the boot 'cover' or tonneau on our Birds.
