Opinions are like belly buttons. Everybody has one.
Seems there were some mighty successful cars in that lineup.

Interesting comment by the Ford salesman...proves once again that Ford reps didn't know their own product!

Wow! The Tbird is in some pretty bad company. I thought the New Bettle was OK, but it was a "chic" car. The Saturn Aura was nice, and the only Saturn I would ever consider except for the SKY.

It's unfortunate that as is so often the case with our domestic carmakers, the first year of a new model can have a host of problems. As for TBird that combined with price didn't give it a chance with the media.

When I told my husband I wanted to buy a 2005, he remembered his first opportunity to drive an '02 and the poor impression he had of it. So, off we went to a Bill Brown Ford to test drive an '05 triple black. He had to admit that Ford had addressed all the concerns he had after driving the '02 at a press event. So my dismay is that Ford gave up on it so quickly. We both love our 'Dunderbird'.

I find the Ford dealer sales manager's comments interesting. The dealer network was clearly one of the culprits in the untimely demise of the car. Between bumping the price up by as much as $10K, lack of knowledge and/or interest on the part of sales personnel, it is a wonder they sold as well as they did. And they do seem to be holding their own as used cars, so how much of a flop does that make them?

Re: Here is an article on Car of the Year Flops

There's a pretty simple definition of a flop vs a success.

Did the car meet or exceed Ford's original sales projections?

If it did, then it's a success. If not, then it's a flop as far as the auto industry goes.

Doesn't really make much sense to ask us retro owners if the car was or wasn't a flop. If I thought it was a flop, I wouldn't have bought one.

But, because I bought one, that doesn't make it a success.

It's a success if enough of us think like you and bought one A car doesn't have to be a big sller to be a success, and most are a success later in life, just like us.

The t-bird is a success in spite of Ford not because of them. Back in the 50's the baby birds weren't so well thought of either. My Dad thought they were junk and he was a Ford guy. Cars for the masses rarely hold their value long. PT Cruiser sold a bunch of cars but I don't see many garage queens. Maybe 50 years down the road when 95% have rusted away the 3 or 4 left will be worth a few bucks.
