If my math is corect there are a total of 3750 limited edition cars for the 4 year run. There are also a few color combos that are pretty rare. When I read discussions on the future of theese cars in terms of price I rarely see anything reguarding the separate value of theese cars that are limited. I know rarety by itself doesn't increase value. look at Edsel or Essex, but " special" edition usually does ie; Crown Vic, Mach I etc. Also as time goes on a good history with a car adds value too. Before carfax a lot of history was written to sell cars. I knew 1 or 2 who were pretty good at it.

Re: Limited Edition models
What makes one of the Retros to be considered a 'Limited Edition" ?
PortHole Authority classifies all the retros by the following: Standard Color, Fashion Color. As for special editions or 'limited edition' each year had a particular car, 2002- Neiman Marcus 200 cars. 2003-007 Edition 700 cars.
2004-Pacific Coast Roadster 1000 cars. 2005-Cashmere 1500 cars.
All the others, even the Inca Gold with only 82 cars is listed as a Fashion Color not a special edition or limited edition.

Re: Limited Edition models
Mine is a Limited (3165, fewer w/Saddle), Fashion Color (MSG), very Special Edition (I love it!). .... And I bought it in May, so it must be a Spring color also. And it has a VIN, therefore its numbered as well.Last edited by RustyFrye; Apr 26, 2012, 08:50 PM.Bird is the word.....

Re: Limited Edition models
A variation on the idea of a Limited Edition was the Spring Color. As the name says, it was a new color for the Retro which was introduced in the Spring -- a not very opaque way of creating interest (excitement?) approx. 6 months after the excitement about the fall colors had waned. As sales numbers declined, Ford came up with this hoped-for sales booster for the 2004 model, & the Spring Color was Light Ice Blue (yes, mine). It was a nice try but it didn't save the siniking ship -- by the time Spring 2005 arrived, there were no more Retros to paint. Thus the LIB remains a limited attempt (a one-time shot) at a limited edition (731 were made) which was not officially designated by Ford as a Limited Edition. So I have a limited edition, but not a Limited Edition.
I've been around long enough to designate myself a loud-mouthed, smart-assed, buncha-crap cynic about any & all attempts to influence my buying habits thru advertising. Thus, I view "limited edition" & "Limited Edition" & "lint-free toilet paper" as, well, just advertising. But I love my Retro ... & yours, too. ---Will

Re: Limited Edition models
I was wrong on the 02 and o3 numbers. I had read 500 in 02 and 750 in 03. Just wondering what Ford intended with the special editions. The 02 NM and 03 007 are self explanitory They weren't just numbered cars as all were identical for that model and completely different color and trim.
I do agree that with a total production of 68+K for the 4 years they are all quite limited .

Originally posted by 5bird7 View PostWill, you missed the 05 spring color - Inca Gold.they produce an inexplicably short run (82? 92?) of IG. I feel that they already had a small batch of IG paint mixed up & ready to go, so they said "Let's not waste it" & went ahead with production of a car already slated for the storage shelf. Certainly Ford didn't think such a small number of any color would re-ignite interest in a car that America had largely forgotten about, right? Hard for me to figure out, but obviously I'm interested -- it's an intriguing puzzle, a baffling corporate decision, as I see it.
The VMG was the unique color for that year -- issued once & never again, just as was the case with Tbird Blue & DSB & I suppose my LIB (hmmm, all blues) & MSG. Red, black, white & silver were the antitheses to each year's unique paint, the recurring side dishes to a one-time main course. My 2004 sales brochure makes it clear (advertising, once again) that LIB was one such this-year-only color.
But the colors chosen for the Retro, whether you like them or not, were just background music to the more pronounced shortcomings of the car, the most outstanding of which, many on TBN seem to say, was a hefty sticker price for a car lacking in a number of obvious areas. I've replaced what I could (DRLs, speakers, inside rearview mirror, LEDs) to bring my car up to what I'd like it to be, but I'm not sure anyone would buy it new, with my mods, for $42,000.
Anyhow, the IG remains a mystery to me -- a last gasp of a spring color for a car whose assembly line shut down permanently about 3 months later. Peculiar. -----Will
