Round, built in Jan. '04 but I have forgotten the day. In fact I have forgotten several days.

Sorry error in post 13,should be the reverse. I have the rare hexagon shaped cap. The
cap in the diagram is round. I have a hunch this is one of a kind extremely rare.

My 04 was built 4/28/04, tomarrow she'll be 8 years old. No cap at all on mine. Does anyone have a suggestion on something simple that's easilly available to put on it to prevent any damage? I wonder if since there are so many missing if they were left off at the factory. I'm pretty sure my spare has never been out of the trunk. Leroy

this is the one on my 02:

And this is the one on my 05:

Both the 02 and the 05 are the same.

and I've been in conversation with someone offsite that says he bought from Ford, a replacement that is 3 inches wide in a hexagon shape, like the one in the drawing on the Jack Instructions. His dealer could not find a replacement like the original one.

Well Dot went to check for you and found this going on!

So $152.00 later for charging system check and new battery and all is well.
The spare will need repaint but trunk is ok.
Oh and yeah mine is round!

Checked mine and it was missing. I pulled the spar out of the car and it was laying in the tire well. So..........pull the tire out and see if it's laying in the well.

Not sure how that happened because I'm the only one to ever pull the spar.

Have been driving it for months at least 3 to 4 days a week.
Battery tested fine 14.2 volts and charging system tested fine.
No starting or other electrical problems.
My Mech said something caused the battery to over heat,
and yes the vent hose was on and not blocked he checked by blowing air thru it..
Looks like it was blowing out from under the top caps.
