  • Soft top boot?

Ah! The hard top cart arrived today, so tomorrow should be my first day of top-down cruising in the new TBird!!!!!!

    WOOOOO HOOOOOOOO

But, I didn't buy a boot for the soft top yet......it's OK to drive around without one (briefly), right?

Some people never use the boot. I like the looks with it on, but no harm done without it.

The soft top like David A says makes it all come together & look finished but no harm done for short duration. Long time with out can make the top dirty from road dirt being blown into the folds.

        Re: Soft top boot?

Welcome from another newbie. Gotta love these cars. Last three toy cars have been Cadillac Allantes with the most difficult convertible top operation ever. Love sitting at a traffic light and hitting the button for the top. ( heck even my college era Falcon Sprint was one button operation). No boot needed.

Back to topic--have members had good luck with T-Bird Concepts premium boot? From looks on sight, the few extra $$ seem worth it.

TBirdNoob, It doesn't make too much difference unless you do it all the time, depending on were you drive or park and the color of your soft top. Junk like leaves, pine needles, ect. will collect in the folds of the top and also get down out of sight under the top. If your top is Sand colored it's even worse, because of the black soot from road pollution can build up over time. These stains and mold are tough to get out.

I have very seldom used the boot for 10 years now. It's a convertible, you have to live with it and when it needs replaced just do it. My headliner may be a bit faded but who cares.

                Re: Soft top boot?

Another question for the veterans....is the raising/lowering of the soft top supposed to be perfectly smooth?

Mine gives just the smallest hiccup about halfway up (and down), but it does not sound like the motor is laboring.

Seems like it gets to a point where its just sticking slightly? Or is this normal?

It's a matter of preference. It looks better to me, so I use it nearly all of the time.

We haven't used ours in years. My preference is to raise the top when we park so I can properly lock the car so I've been willing to take the hit on looks. Part of this is also influenced by the fact that we have an '02 with the original hard boot that takes up most of the trunk when you have to store it.

I think it looks much better with the boot on, but honestly, I look so damn good when the top is down nobody ever notices the boot or not. HA I KILL ME!
