    Re: Considering Selling

If you're really set on selling the Thunderbird, I hope it works out well for you. I was in the same boat regarding my 1976 Thunderbird. It was burning fuel like crazy. The driver's power window had gone out (thankfully in the up position) and the backup light in the rear was out and changing the bulb had no effect....clearly a wiring problem. Selling the car at the time was the logical and sensible thing to do, and I have regretted it every day since then. Don't discount the emotional effect a car can have on your life.

      Re: Considering Selling

One of my hesitations in selling is that I haven't sold a car privately in decades and with all the scams out there I'm not sure just how to handle the transaction. It seems everything can be falsified so how do you insure payment is legitimate?

Request a certified bank check (cashier's check), and DO NOT release the car or sign over the title until the funds have been verified (i.e., take the check to the bank on which it was drawn), and are securely in your hot little hands! Simple as that.

          Re: Considering Selling

          Hate selling cars privately.

I sold my 89 Towncar to a neighbor up the block, and high mileage got to it. He sold it quickly.

Sold my daughter's Mustang privately. Too many "shifty" buyers.

One claimed he wanted the car for his daughter, but made an offer without even driving it.

Another "Mr shifty" made an offer after driving the car up the block (500 ft), making a U Turn, and coming back.

After we agreed on a price, he didn't want me to date the Bill of Sale, nor did he want to sign as "buyer".

Not only did I insist on everything being filled out, I took a copy (using our outdated Fax machine), and kept it just in case.

What about the license plates. Does buy come with their own temporary one?

The buyer is going to have to take care of his own registration - that's his responsibility. DO NOT let him drive off with your old plates still attached.

                Re: Considering Selling

In Oklahoma the plate is assigned to the car, not the owner. The exception would be personalized plates which the owner can apply to have moved to another car.
