UH Oh Some disiappointment ahead. No matter how mich it won't be enough to pay $40 K +++ and let one sit for 10 years

2002's with very little miles means lots of oil leaks. Possiable cooling system concerns. Dry rotted tires and seals. Fan belt dry rotted. Battery dead. All this and more for a 10 year old car. They'll sell for 24/25 K. Zeroo warranty I'd pay 10/12 K no more. Simple saying of mine is/was " IOf you don't use it you loose it "

Ron, it goes to show that a great many of the retros were immediately hoarded by investors. It's no wonder then, why we have a forum dedicated just to bird-watching. My humble presumption is that was also the cause behind the phenomenom of premium-over-sticker-price for the 02's. At any rate, there is definitely a price curve up relative to the fewer the miles on the odometer. Another factor on retros is model year, for instance, there are fewer 05's (which I suspect weren't hoarded to the degree that the '02's were) than any other year, etc., etc. OK, so the 7 miler will bid to about 35 grand, while the 58 miler will likely bring in about 33 grand.

With the 02s, both sound like they are "factory" miles as Ford tested many of the 2002s for up to 54 miles before shipping, particularly those first 6 months of production. (and if it was in a dealer's stash, he didn't pay msrp or anything over)

I see it a little differently. If the tires, battery and belts are ten years old they probably need to be replaced whether the car has been driven or not. But for someone who for whatever reason was unable to get one back in 2002 here is a second chance to get one of these in new condition for less in real dollars than when they were new. For 10 or 12K you'd be lucky to get a half decent one now with 100,000 miles on it. I know which way I'd rather go.

The Yellow 02 at Mecum in Indy on May 15th went for $36,500.00 plus buyers premium. It had a little over 200 miles on it. I talked to a guy that was there that day and he said there was alot of interest in the car. Said if there had been 2 or 3 more they would've all sold.

                        Larry,
I agree with you. I would take the ultra-low mileage car over high mileage any day. I think the problems on one that has been sitting are over stated. Change the battery, tires and fluids and you have a new car. JMHO

As for what these two cars will go for at auction, my guess is not over $30,000. I think the one that sold for $36,500 recently was an anomaly - hope I am wrong.

Do you, or maybe others, remember the group of '02s, one of each color, that were auctioned several years ago? They were all owned by one person and had very, very low miles like these do. If I remember correctly, these cars were literally "in the wrapper"-they had all of the factory markings as if they had just come off the car carrier. I think these cars brought in the upper $20K range at the time. Do you think these might be from that group?

Thanks. What a shame. 10 years, virtually no miles, and virtually no enjoyment. I hope someone at least sat in them a lot!!
