  • Glued Top To Rear Window

I just got finished gluing the top to the rear window bottom edge. It separated bit by bit and water would collect under the top between the glass and the top. TBN led me to the proper glue -Permatex Perma Oxy - a 5 min Epoxy. I was sweating bullets over this job cause if I spilled some on the top or it dried to quick I would have a mess on my hands. I tried a small spot on a board to see how fast it would set up and dry. It set up in about 3 1/2 min.!! I had to work quickly when I mixed the whole tube. I used the famous Saran Wrap Post info. to guard against over spill (or smear). It's a done deal and it came out great. Hope it lasts.

If it works its Yankee ingenuity if it doesn't mums the word.

Re: Glued Top To Rear Window

Congrats on your repair! I had the some problem and searched TBN for the solution. I found several suggestions on which glue to use; some that have worked, so far, and some that didn't last very long. I searched the web for the Permatex Perma Oxy without success; local auto parts stores were no help either. West Marine had lots of Permatex products but not the Perma Oxy and they couldn't find it in their system to order. I went to auto glass installer, suggested on TBN, but he referred me to a top and trim shop. I actually went to two convertible top shops and neither would do the job - they did try to sell me a new top for approx. $2000.

Finally, while having car serviced at LM dealer I mentioned the problem with the top. Service writer referred me to top shop that does all their work. Shop looked at area coming unglued, said that was normal and he could reglue it for me. He etched area where glue was applied and kept car 24 hours so driving vibrations would not effect glue until it was fully set. I've only had car since Tue. so don't know yet how the reglue will list, but shop was confident it would hold as he has done lots of this type of repair - not just T'birds but all types of convertibles. We'll see!

Glad you got your top fixed.
There were 20,000 results when i searched for Permatex Perma Oxy. Google was kind enough to spell it correctly for me. Amazon has Permatex PermaPoxy for $7.13.
          Seems like a good deal.

A lot better car and even more exclusive, but doesn't have the Cachet the Thunderbird had. Adios, mi Amigo.

Cliff, I got the Permatex at Auto Zone. $6.50 I'm curious to know what the top shop used. I'm sure it will last.
