The last link in Dot's post has images of all to be auctioned. While the TBirds are naturally of interest, it was like being in an automotive candy store while scrolling down; I would enjoy just being there to look at the cars. The one that really caught my eye was the Model A ragtop truck, but so many absolute classics. Thanks for sharing this, Dot.

The best car show in my opinion is an auction. I was at Barrett Jackson in Vegas 3 years ago. The only bad part is a few consignors didn't like to wipe my drewl off.

Up here in " Coeur D Alene" Idaho anything is possible. We have no Smog checks and I have registered a car with a bill of sale. Dealers were bringing cars in from Canada and playing with the odometer and getting them registered. If either of these two could be registered here first then maybe another state might have to honor it, but emissions standards may throw a wrench in that. But all of this would just be a dream considering that these cars are possibly going to sell for the same as buying a small house(true in this neck of the woods)

It would be interesting if Ford would license someone to re-create the Retro using the 2003 Supercharged concept as the template, much as they did with Shay and the re-manufactured Model 'A' as mentioned recently in another thread.

It would take a very deep pocketed person to finance such a project, but certainly a Jeff Bezos, Mark Cuban or Bill Gates could afford it. The resulting car would probably have to be priced at $ 75,000 or more, severely limiting the potential market, but it could be done.

Then again, Ford could just make some minor styling changes to an existing platform and 're-badge' it as a 'Thunderbird.' Not a very exciting proposition, especially to fans of the Retro, but it would probably sell anyway.

Those are great links, Dot. Their auction catalog shows fourteen Thunderbirds and displays some group photos in addition to the ones detailing each car. I like this one showing a 1956 car (Lot #151) in the foreground that was originally Colonial White but was repainted (by someone other than the current owner) to Fiesta Red which is practically identical to the 007 car's Coral.

(To stay within TBN's desired size-per-photo this is two files stacked one atop the other.)

The red supercharged car that was at the Maggie Valley event was a test mule to see if they could get everything working and what it would take to actually produce a supercharged model for production. It was not a show car / concept car in the sense it was ready for a reveal to the public. It was supposed to be destroyed, but Jim Youngs managed to save it from the crusher and worked a deal for Earl Tindol to purchase it for his collection. Like the concept cars, it can not be licensed for the street.

Per Dot, the red Sports Roadster Concept car is a reworking of the original red concept car that Ford showed around the same time as the yellow and black with red interior concept cars.

The silver Supercharged Concept car with the mustard interior is just that - a concept/show car. It does have a working drive train with a fancy engine cover, but it is not supercharged.

Arrg - why didn't they make a super-charged version? I just don't get Ford. IMHO Ford could have greatly bolstered sales if they offered some of the Lincoln LS candy and a super-charged model of the Thunderbird.

Chuck, I think the answer to this is based largely on pricing. After creating the 2003 Supercharged Concept, Ford realized that a supercharged Thunderbird would have to be priced at $ 50,000+ if it was offered. Considering that sales for the 2004 and 2005 at $ 40,000-42,000 were already weak, it was probably pretty hard to make a business case for a model costing $ 50K or more.

Many thought the Retro was overpriced at $ 40,000 at the time. Sure, there would have been some buyers for whom the $ 50K price tag was no deterrent, but I don't think the market was big enough to justify the project, at least not in Ford's mind.

Phil, I get it, it's all about the money. I just wonder if they offered a super-charged version and a bunch of the "candy" that was available in the LS if that might have sparked more if an interest. I wish I had the coin to replace the entire drivetrain but then again I wish I had the coin to to lots of stuff. Not that I'm unhappy with my birds, I could be a lot happier.

There is a $20 fee to just come and view the cars that weekend. Not sure about viewing times so check the site out.

                        Interesting notes:
I wonder why they indicated 280 HP for the 2002 Sport Roadster Concept.

Why does the 2003 Supercharged Concept have a 2002 instrument panel?

I don't think either one of the TBird concept cars will bring anywhere near what they expect. I think the turbo will bring the most. The Sport Roadster is nothing special other than the interior. Does either one have a hard-top? There are many other cars in this auction that are better buys and will increase in value.

The red car was previously auctioned-off by the same (RM) company three years ago at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance with a pre-auction projected sale price of $125,000 - $175,000. The car sold at that time for $55,000.

The last time RM Auctions sold that car, three years ago, they did not list the horsepower. Other references, like this one - http://www.carpictures.com/vehicle/0...ncept-red-2002 - specify 252 bhp.

It's a 2002 car, heavily modified, and first revealed in February, 2003.

Neither car has a hard top. Not sure if the Sports Roadster even has a convertible top - I'm guessing it does not. The Supercharged Concept does have a black soft top.
