Betcha money its the degas bottle. Replaced mine with the "cheap aftermarket Dorman" made in Vietnam by the way, it lasted 3900 miles. Get OEM parts and press on.

Re: Need Some Help Is this Coolant??

Remember the photo I posted about the puddle of coolant leak I found on my garage floor?

With Senor Gar's continued help & support the cause of this puddle has been found & corrected.

Gar gave me to the confidence to go against what at first was my better judgement.

Gar determined that the Degas bottle was over filled by at the Bird's last service. When the car was ice cold to ambient temperature the coolant level in the Degas bottle was well over an 1 1/2 inches above the highest cold fill mark on the bottle. When the coolant was hot it would expand filling the Degas bottle to the overflow and the coolant would drip out the bottle down onto the floor.

By using a turkey baster I sucked out the coolant from the Degas bottle until it was down below the highest cold mark. I did this Saturday. I have used the Bird everyday since and have been monitoring the coolant level.

With the Bird at operating temp(mid-way) on the dash gauge the coolant level in the Degas bottle is about an 5/8" above the high cold fill level and as the Bird cools down the coolant level returns back into between the cold fill level marks. Most importantly there is NOT any coolant on the garage floor.

Thank you Gar, thank you very much.
      Mike

I talked to Gar for about an hour the other day and can confirm he does indeed know what he is talking about... he's really knowledgeable!

Come on guys, your're making me blush All I can say is I am in good company and have received my share of help from you all as well.

Mike, let's cross our fingers and hope your coolant leak is remedied. We always hope it's something simple and yet find it hard to believe when it is, especially when the stuff sneaks out during the evening sports scores on the telly.

Re: Need Some Help Is this Coolant??

Steve, I had the same thing happen on my IG last week. Oil on the garage floor under the car and I am thinking about all kinds of bad possibilities. Then I checked the filter, proceeded to tighten the filter and then cleaned up the oil on the floor. Went in the house and opened a beer and sighed. No more oil on the floor since then.
Crazy how that filter can get loose. I have driven that car about 1500 miles since I bought it and no sign of a leak, then one shows up.

They don't "get loose". Most likely not tightened correctly in the first place. Better have it replaced and top up the oil right right away or at least check it before each drive for the next few weeks.

Dave, have you had the oil changed since you bought it? If not, the Glendale dealer is the one to blame for the "loose" filter.

How can that be? The Glendale dealer is sooo good.

I had the oil changed right after I discovered the leak, so it got a new filter then. I wanted a clean starting point to begin monitoring the possibility of any continuing problems. So far so good. We can blame this one on Glendale as far as I am concerned.

It just funny to me it took so long to show up. First time for me to have this kind of thing happen.

½ a turn will work its way loose eventually

You could blame Ford for its 'open to interpretation' diagram. So much for a pic worth 1000 words!
The instruction for ¾-1 turn is AFTER the gasket is just seated (contacting the oil cooler).

Sounds like a quick lube job.
