  • Engine Problem

Guys, I was driving 2 weeks ago and was driving about 45 mph up a mountain and the car started missing and losing power. It was like pulling the spark plugs off. The wrench came on the dash and the car could not maintain its speed. There was no place to pull off the road and with no traffic, I stopped and turned the engine off. I thought I would try to restart the engine and when I did, it ran as if nothing was wrong. I took it to a Lincoln dealership and drove it and checked for DTCS. The mechanic stated none present. He ran a power balance test and was unable to find a cause. Only two days later it did the same thing, losing power and missing really bad. Again I turned off the car and restarted it with it running fine. Any ideas what might be going on?

Wish I could tell you to stay out of the mountains, but that will not work around here. I would say you have one or two cops that are bad. They have had to take mine out on the road with the machine hooked up to find the bad cop.

Thanks Ron. I have 80,000 on the car, so I might just need to put all 8 new ones in.

That is what I would do, find a good independent garage.

This happened to me several years ago. Replaced the throttle body and that cured the problem permanently. Maybe got water in the throttle body initially.

Got all 8 COPs replaced yesterday on our 33,000 mile PCR at a local Lincoln dealer. Car was running rough but no engine light came on. Dealer charged $961.00 out the door and I was pleased at that price. Neighbor had all 8 of his done there last week too for same price. As Ron has said before, "It's not IF you are going to have a COP problem some day on your Thunderbird but WHEN you have the problem". So I do recommend getting them all changed when one or two go bad.

Steve, I'm assuming they changed the spark plugs as well. Definitely not the worst price we have heard for the job from a dealership.

Yikes! They do not show on the invoice, so I assume they did NOT change them! I should have learned from all the posts on here that that was necessary! So maybe that was NOT such a good deal! Oh well......I still feel better about driving the car now.
