You are right, 2K, I found a picture of the '57 with the top down and it was just as ugly as the one I found for the '55. Since almost no pictures of the cars from 55' to 57' with the hard top off show the rag top, my guess is that it was seldom ordered.
Bunch of posts do show I was wrong about the soft top. My girlfriends father told me after we got caught in the rain that the top was behind the seat....we looked at it wasn't so he obviously didn't order it. I didn't have one with mine either....but I guess the behind the seat design eluded me....so thanks.

Most people do not leave the ugly soft top setting up on the deck. That is why you see most pictures with a clean upper deck, the smart people have stored their soft top behind the seat. I would bet that over 80% of early birds came with the soft top and at least 65% had both.
