Exactly why I've never tried it.

Yeah, drinking 3 beers while standing on your head is a little complicated but worth a try.

Now what if you are a non-drinker with Tinnitus like me? Chimes are on all the time, day and night !!!

Drive it like you stole it !!!

With the top DOWN, why didn't you reach in and push the button to unlock the door?

If the door is locked by use of the remote, the door unlock button (and the trunk button) will not function.

First off allow me to tell you how much I appreciate the time and effort that you took to itemize each step.
Now, much to my chagrin, I tried the suggested "fiX" as outlined.
            Surprise, surprise, it worked !!
However, it only worked for that particular drive.
In other words, the Safety Belt Alert went off and stayed off for the entire drive. Not that that was my intention.
My intention was for the "Door Open" alert or chime to be disabled.
The fact that I experienced some success, tells me that I was on the right track.
For your information only, as you seem to be the only one interested,I will tell you that after step 5, the Safety Belt light never came on for the predicted 3 seconds, therefore I never received confirmation as expected in Step 7.
Somewhere between here and there success is waiting !!!
Thanks again, there could be a pizza in your future ???

Thanks for getting back. This was a sort of "hail Mary" play at best. You own a 2002 and my info was from the 2003 manual. There could be a difference between years so I suggest looking in the '02 manual. If you don't have one, you can download it at the Ford website.

              BTW, pizza is always good.

So if you lock with the remote wouldn't you have the remote in your hand to unlock the car?

                    Re: Door Open "Alert" !

Given lipster's situation, I would hope so. However, I was just clarifying to anyone here who didn't realize that you can (and should) use your remote to lock your car, even if the top is down, because it disables the door lock and the trunk button.
