    Re: Show me your Whitewalls

I really like the redline by Coker. I only wish they'd mold the redline into a better tire. Even at $272 I'd probably break down if the tire had a better speed ratingand tread design

A speed rating of H is tested to 130mph. If you routinely exceed that, find a different tire. A temperature rating of B just indicates that it runs hotter than an A rating. Even a C rating exceeds DOT standards. The B traction rating, while on the lower side, is more than sufficient for the driving that most of us normally encounter. Probably not the best for snow.

Remember porta walls ? I bought a set in '58 and they flapped in the wind oover 35 MPH and never even looked like a whitewall. Wonder if that's why Western Auto went under?

White walls seem to me to be a geezer option.

I can't forget the hours I spent years ago cleaning white walls. Yearning for those day leaves me cold. I lived for years in Europe and found the freedom from those miserable white walls welcome. Why would anybody want them back?

The 'Retro' Thunderbird is the first two-seat convertible T-Bird since the 1957 Thunderbird, and part of the inspiration of its design was the 'Baby Bird.' So it's natural that some owners like the idea of wide white walls to extend that look.

As for being a 'geezer option,' like any mod on any car, it's a matter of personal taste and preference.

As for the 'chore' of cleaning white wall tires, I'd say that's probably the least of a Retro owner's concerns, and for that matter, the least of life in general's concerns. Almost like saying, "Who wants a nice green lawn ... you just have to cut the grass all the time."

Different strokes for different folks ...

Phil, just a note. My car has the chrome wheels with the small, round, white circle in the middle. I was told by a person involved in the design of the retro bird that the white ring was a kind of recognition of the white walls on the first birds, '55,'56 and '57 which my '55 had. It also had a 6 volt electrical system and that was a bigger pain than the white walls.
