Re: What car have you sold that you regret most?

Tough to decide.....1939 Ford three window coupe, 1965, 66, 67 fastback, Mustangs, plus a 1969 Mustang Mach1, 351cu, a '7o or '71 Torino '56 Ford Victoria, not the crown, totally custom, repainted metallic turquoise, and many others. Also had a '86 bird 5L that got 33mpg on the highway every trip, 22 gal fuel cell, 725 mile range non-stop.
Now my all time favorite....1997 Thunderbird lx, Laser Red, full ground effects package, came off the assembly line 10 days before shutdown. Bought it new, still have it, in showroom condition.

I also had a '69 Mach1. Was a metallic green with gold stripes. Turned high 11s low 12s depending on how well I kept the rear end on the ground. Had a 390 in it, with 428 heads which were sent out and milled, a nice Crane cam, your basic Holley 1180 double pumper, electric fuel pump and of course 411 posi rear. took the inserts out of the fold down back seat and put 2 inch shag carpet in their place, painted the little circle lights in the back red. Was quite the rig - only thing on the outside was the Cragar SSes, you could see the yellow traction bars and it was lifted with monroe air shocks. In the early 70s you couldn't have a car that wasn't jacked up. There was nothing I could do to keep power steering hoses on that car. I must have left 15 gallons of power steering fluid on the drag strip in Dover Plains NY. And of course I drove the thing on the street, lost my license, went to college, car sat in the garage. My parents moved to FL so I had no choice but to sell it. I do still miss my '72 Monteray the most though, I loved that car. Best car I ever had in the snow. Wonderful back seat.

Ron, I never had the guts to go 105 in my '59. But, regarding lift from the fins I used the tops of the fins for another purpose. In the great 1967 Blizzard when I lived in Chicago I piled a pyramid of snow on the top of the fins and trunk lid, probably several hundred pounds of that white stuff. With snow tires on the back I was able to navigate all over the city when all the other cars and trucks were unable to move. So the fins were useful after all!

The Maryland State Police used '59 Chevys as patrol cars. Not certain what engines, but likely the 250 hp or 300 hp 348. I remember that many troopers put sandbags in the trunk in an attempt to avoid rear end lift at high speeds. I feel certain the extra weight didn't help performance much.

I had the exhaust modified so that I could by-pass the mufflers, and I had to strap a bumper jack in the grille opening. I had removed the grille, and, by the rules, the car had to have a grille. So, I wired my jack into the grille opening. I passed "inspection".

              Talk about crazy!!

There were rumors that, due to the rear tail fin design, 59 Impalas could start to lift at high speeds.
I had some stubby pipes welded in just after the exhaust manifolds with water pipe caps. That unmuffled 348 made quite a rumble echoing off the mountains sides.

My 1969 Camaro SS/RS convertible. Fully loaded w/power windows, SS wheels, liquid tire chain etc. I sold it in 1984 for $6,500.00 and used the money towards a down payment on a property. I still miss it and am sure it's still around as it was pristine when I sold it to a collector.

                  Yeah, memories.

After leaving the strip, I'd leave the pipes open until the next day, and kept the chalked class info on my side window.

'86 Suzuki GSX-R750; first model year you could get in the States. Race bike for the street (back then when new). It was the reason I stopped trying to make cars go fast. Owned it for 10 years and 30,000 miles. Want it back bad.

They were just a novelty aftermarket wheel cover purchased from Canadian Tire or you could perhaps find them in a place like J.C. Whitney .

As for me, I regret selling my '65 Shelby G.T.350, my '71 Trans Am 455 H.O., and my '65 Ford Falcon Sedan Delivery. All were special cars and I miss them. The Shelby and the Sedan Delivery came along when I was in my 20's and 30's, but the Trans Am was my high school car. Frankly, I can't believe I survived!!!!

J.C. Whitney and Western Auto were all we had. That's why many of us lived in junk yards. I am blowed away by the Auto supply after market today, where you can build a car from scratch,,,,, if you can afford it.
