The freedom of transportation was a life changing event for a teenager in the 50's. We all see photo's in mag's with 50's cars in front of drive-in restaurants or the then common local soda fountain. They are pretty much as rare as the cars that went there. What was your hang-out.

Re: Where did you go most often in your 1st car?
On the northside of Chicago, and just west of the city limits was Skip's Fiesta Drive-in restaurant. Some people referred to Route 64 (North Avenue) as the N.A.T.A. the North Avenue Timing Association for all the street races that started at 1st Ave and proceeded west for about a mile with no stoplights or cross streets. I remember it well!sigpic

We had two main hangouts out when I was in High School. Marty's Pizza ,which is still there and Carter's Diner which is long gone. Carters was the Typical Railroad Car style diner with the polished stainless exterior. Sure wish it was still around.sigpic

Re: Where did you go most often in your 1st car?
Wow, I could write a book on this topic. Almost every Friday and Saturday night between April and September in 62 and 63 began or ended on Woodward Avenue between 8 mile, Ferndale and 19 mile Bloomfield Hills. A lot like the street scenes in American Graffiti only on a much grander scale. You would often see drivers and team members from the Ramchargers, Royal Bobcat, Bob Ford, Golden Commandos and the McKesson Bros. There was a Sunoco station at 15 mile and Woodward that some wicked fast S/S and A/FX guys were always hanging out at. The Royal Oak police were pretty cool with what was going on and would often let guys have at it for two or three blocks. My oh my what a great time to be a car crazy teenager.

We had the Blue Circle and the Dutch Maid, of course we went to Watauga Lake for the submarine races. We heard about them from Dick Biondi WLS Chicago. After 10:00 p.m. all our local stations went off the air and we got the power stations from the Mid-West.02 Nieman Marcus-SS htp-f/sil. #165 - 21 states-DC

Re: Where did you go most often in your 1st car?
In the town I grew up in (late 60's early 70's) we had a Shoney's Big Boy that had curb services. We would go down, back into a stall, and watch the cars "bounce" through Shoney's. They had installed speed bumps in the curb service area so that no one would do any burnouts or other frowned upon stunts, that gave it the term "bouncing" through Shoney's. I had a 71 Torino that I would love to have back in my garage again.Keeper of the Flames

Re: Where did you go most often in your 1st car?
Small town for me was the county seat. In the center of town was the courthouse and on each corner a stop light. It was a Friday and Saturday night thing to drive around and around and around the courthouse. The city fathers decided that driving around the square more that three times warranted a traffic citation. Being resourceful, we would drive two and a half times, go one block over, back to the square for two a a half trips...then repeat. Gasoline was about 30 cents a gallon and a couple bucks would be entertainment for the night!Pensacola, FL

In Orlando in the 50's ii was Pig and Whistle then Steak N Shake came to town. But in 50's in Tampa it was Oak Grove sundries after school,,, but at 4:00 it became a ghost town when Bandstand came on. The soda fountain was soooo like Happy day's or visa versa.
