I wonder when our retros will make the buy or hold list.

It was fourteen years ago for me. For Hagerty's, I'd guess the second Tuesday of next week.

One of the best cars we ever owned was our '93 Mustang GT. Bought it new off the showroom floor and owned it for almost 10 years. Only problem we ever had with it was the A/C compressor went out (but then, this IS Phoenix!). One of the MANY cars I wish I'd kept.

Prices for the 55-57 Thunderbird have definitely softened as a whole. People buy the classics they remember growing up with and wanting to own. I have great Thunderbird memories, but most were of the early 60's through 90's models.

I really liked the 3rd generation Mustangs of the late 70's and early 80's when they came out and I used one for daily transportation for a short period. A good car, but nothing exceptional that I would seek out as a classic vehicle.

            True statement.

Considering that the first squarebird outsold 55/6/7 combined, I'm a little surprised that the 58/59/60 didn't do better in the value department.

Still has to be a lot of car buyers around remembering, when they were little kids, riding in daddy's new squarebird with top or windows down.

My Dad owned a '59 Bird...was always breaking down, primarily to overheating/blowing freeze plugs.

Looked at a GT in '05 and wondered why anyone would pay $50+ K for a race car, Now at today's price I wonder why anyone would buy to hold. This is the kind of stuff that screws up the car game and people's heads. But---- it IS real.

Hold to enjoy or hold to sell?
I can't think of a car Owned older than a '70 that isn't worth several times what it cost new. You can bet if I had kept them and there were quite a few, they wouldn't be.
The retro bird May get back to it's original price but many of us won't see it.

If they think a '55-'57 Thunderbird is expensive, try buying a Ford GT to Hold.
$215K for a "fair" condition GT. RIGHT.

The Hagerty article underscores the fact that--if you buy for love not money, then you can't go wrong. There is a shrinking fan base for all 50's cars, including the '55-'57 Thunderbird. I've wanted a 1956 Thunderbird since I was nine years old, so I plan to hang on to mine.

Over the years I've had a number of classic vehicles to include a 1925 Ford Model T, 1968 Buick Riviera, and numerous VW Beetles from 1963 - 1974. While they were all fun, I'm a little past car shows. Some of the shows have gotten to be 3 and 4 day events. No fun to spend 3-4 days sitting in a parking lot for a plastic trophy.

I still like older vehicles; but my two Thunderbirds are basically filling the bill, are a pleasure to drive, and still much more reliable. We have a great group here in Las Vegas that gets together for dinner and cruises on a monthly basis. I've also enjoyed taking the Thunderbirds on out of state road trips too. Much more fun to go somewhere and spend time with people too.
