    Re: Three Fords To Buy-Sell-Hold Right Now

    I've contemplated getting a classic car a few times in the past, but regardless of which I drool over for a while, I ask myself, "what, exactly would I do with it?". It's too valuable to drive around. Storing it in the garage isn't much fun, either. I conclude each time that it's an ego trip and I've other trips to take and better ways to spend my remaining funds.

      One big reason I bought a retro was that it kinda killed the urge to spend on a 50's and then be afraid to drive it. A touch of nostalgia with a little modern convenience has worked pretty well for me.

        Re: Three Fords To Buy-Sell-Hold Right Now

        As I look back over my desire to own a Thunderbird--beginning at nine with my first sighting of a beautiful black '56 in a grocery store parking lot and later on in 2001 with the decision to buy a Retro--a surprising and satisfying truth emerges.

        And it is this: Owning a classic car may be costly and troublesome at times, but it provides a wonderful opportunity to make friends of strangers. It's the thirty minute trip to the gas station where people approach you to ask questions and for permission to take pictures with the car. It is the chance to have your car featured in a Dolly Parton Christmas movie while getting to meet Miss Parton in person. Even during times when it is overheating and in need of a transmission rebuild, the experience of owning a classic car is deeply personal and sometimes moving. The smiles and thumbs-up you receive driving down the street make it all worthwhile.

          Your car looked good with a hot blonde driving it.

            I was at Wixom the day they were showing the Ford GT to the press (I got to see them finishing the car) and I remember thinking that I couldn't afford 150K for a weekend driver so my plan was to wait 5+ years and buy one for 50K or less....so much for that plan!

              I have had three of the classic Thunderbirds and what you say is very true, but I will add that the same is true of the Retro Thunderbirds. Great people come with both.

                I always wanted a '56 Tbird since I was a kid it was my dream car. However, driving my '05 gives me all the conveniences and comfort of a modern car with the retro look that is so cool. And, I'm not afraid to drive and enjoy it.

                    Re: Three Fords To Buy-Sell-Hold Right Now

                    "My heart leaps up when I behold
                    A rainbow in the sky;
                    So was it when my life began;
                    So is it now I am a man;
                    So be it when I shall grow old,
                    Or let me die!
                    The child is father of the Man. . ." William Wordsworth 1888

                    Wordsworth's point is man is the product of his childhood desires. Owning a 1956 Thunderbird was my childhood dream at nine. Despite the joy I get from driving my 2002 Thunderbird, I could not totally abandon my childhood dream. I don't own my '56--I am merely its steward until it is time to pass it to another.

                      Well, as the old adage goes,
                      He who dies with the most toys
                      leaves someone with a huge garage sale to manage.

                        It was a bad time for the auto industry, but for me this was the biggest disaster Ford could have come up with. Not necessarily the car but calling it a T Bird ??????

                              I owned a '60 bird at one point. It was a boat...not a great car. Bought on impulse because a relative owned one I grew up riding in and really wanted one....pass. Love my retro-bird much more.
