  • Thunderbird Appreciation Day

I don't think information has been posted on this yet, so I am entering it here. The first annual Thunderbird Appreciation Day is scheduled for May 21, 2017. Although it is the brainchild of folks in the major, national, traditional TBird clubs, TBN members certainly should be aware of it and celebrate. The concept is for folks who own TBirds to drive them and show them off on that day. Some of the traditional clubs and/or their chapters will have specific events so check out their websites and Facebook sites for more info. I know that there are plans for the Mid-Atlantic group so stay tuned. I hope to see a lot of TBirds out that day. This certainly looks like a ready made reason for a TBN gathering, as if we need a formal reason to gather and have Fun, Fun, Fun.

I like the idea, but I think it would have been nice if they included TBN from the beginning instead of an afterthought.

You need to think twice about this.

Paul, my friend, it was a not for a lack of trying. The effort was spearheaded by the "traditional" clubs which is the reason they are identified with it. I thought that October 22 - the day the TBird was introduced in 1954 - might have been an appropriate recognition date but that was felt to be too late in the season in some regions of the country for outdoor events that might be associated with the event. I then recommended July 1, the official last production date in 2005. I think May 21 was selected because it was early in the car show and cruise season. I think it will always be that Sunday which might be a little confusing for the first few years IMHO. Also IMHO - every day is TBird appreciation day. I hope it is a successful endeavor.

Drat! I thought it was March 21 which was a good date. The first full day of Spring seemed appropriate....

Paul, keep in mind, most everyone that does not own a Retro has never heard of TBN, hence TBN was not included from the get-go.
I have had Thunderbirds since 1986, never knew about TBN till after I bought a Retro in 2014.
So, for the record, let Skip and I personally invite all of TBN to Thunderbird appreciation day.

That is true. I went to the annual Pageant of the Thunderbird in Anaheim, California in 2013 and 2014. It's probably the largest Thunderbird gathering each year. I talked to many retro owners and most were not aware of this TBN website/group either.

Even so many of the 10,900 "members" are one and done. Many never make a single post. Their loss, but it is what it is.

                  Greg:

Your observation and comment are spot on. TBN has more "members" than all of the traditional clubs combined. And not all of their members get involved in events or renew every year. I'm certain there will be some formal events taking place all over the country, and probably beyond. Let's hope we see a lot of TBirds out on that day. Weather permitting, of course.

I've been a member of CTCI for a number of years now. Mostly because they were the most organized of the 3 national groups in my opinion. I've been a little disappointed though. Bill Long, who also owns a retro and has been here on TBN was president this past year. I had hoped that under his leadership there would be more serious discussion into formally recognizing the new Classic Thunderbird, but it didn't happen. As such, there is a good chance I will let my membership expire at the end of the year. The only benefit is that it keeps me more in contact with vintage Thunderbird owners who I invite to join for our monthly Thunderbirds of Las Vegas dinners.

We had a local Thunderbird club affiliate with VTCI here in Las Vegas, but it hasn't done much since October after one of the key organizers left. While there are some excellent VTCI chapters in the US, I've never really been that impressed by the national organization.

The national auto organizations (Thunderbird or others) need to recognize that unless they offer a really personal experience opportunity, their days are numbered. Many people use to join to affiliate with others even if they didn't always make the national shows and events. Now there is this thing called social media that has wiped out most of the value that they may have had.

Those that are still active in these clubs is a very aging demographic.

Bill was one of the few voices that advocated for the 2002-2005 Thunderbird to be included in CTCI some years back. A proposal was put out to the membership as I recall to get some input but it didn't gain much traction. Many of the current members wanted to stay with the 55-57's only.

But most of us appreciate our Thunderbirds every day.

CTCI parent organization still only recognizes the 55-57 "classic" thunderbirds, but local chapters of CTCI accept members with other years besides classics. VTCI accepts all years, as does ITC, and all their local chapters. We belong to a local CTCI chapter without a classic, also a local VTCI chapter without a classic. I am a member of ITC, and until recently was the Southeast Region District Advisor for ITC. With all that said, My wife and I have done more trips, get-togethers, etc. with TBN then all the others combined.
Starting with the local clubs thru the parent organizations there are always core groups. Yes, some people join TBN and are never heard from again, but every now and then a new person becomes part of the core group....hooray......!
The Thunderbird Appreciations day hopefully will have "Birds" out on the road all over the country, what an opportunity for all clubs to gain a new member or two, including TBN.
                            Lets go gettem !!!
                            I'm done rambling.

I added May 21 as "Thunderbird Appreciation Day". Should that be Ford Thunderbird Appreciation Day?
