  • Which car deal have you walked away from and regretted the least?

I sold my manual Volvo V70R daily driver to buy a MINI Cooper JCW Clubman a few years ago. Renting a car I drove a couple states away to pick it up. Upon arrival and close inspection I discovered it was not as represented. I drove back home the same long night.

While I still like the styling, performance and handling of the JCW Clubman, the more informed I have become the more I feel I likely dodged an expensive nightmare.

In 85 I was close to buying a Chrysler 5th Avenue. I opted for a Cadillac Sedan DeVille.

Many, many years ago I wanted a compact pick up. The S-10 had just been restyled and the local dealer had the exact one I wanted. First, I walked the lot and was ignored. Then, after I went to the sales office, I was told that the sticker was the price and they did not negotiate. I stopped at the Ford dealer on the way home and bought a Ranger. I'm now on my third (and final) Ranger. And, every time I see a S-10/Colorado/Canyon, I grin and pat my Ranger on the dash.

Looking for my first Corvette in 1971, I passed on a '67 Vette convertible and opted for the newer styled T-Top 1969. BIG MISTAKE!

In 1961 my grandfather offered to give me his 1957 Buick century 2 door hardtop with 10,000 miles on it. I graciously told him to trade it as I wasn't a "Buick " guy and I didn't like the tan over black color. He bought a Nova which I liked even less.

2000 ordered a new Mercedes S500 from local dealer. Car arrived and ran nothing like the demo. That's when I learned Benz dealers have ringers for demos. Refused delivery and got my deposit back. Mercedes W220 cars turned out to be engineering/manufacturing lemons and I feel good about not accepting the car.

ETA Also in 1978 ordered a new first-year Buick Turbo Regal. Accepted car but engine had too many issues that needed changed to make it work correctly (wrong engine firing sequence, turbo mismatch, ECM a total mess etc). Kept the car four months then traded it for a 1978 Cadillac Seville that I dearly loved. Kept the Seville twenty-two years and 320,000 miles. That was a good trade.

We're lighter. We're faster. If that don't work, we're nastier.

                  In 1973, I put a $50 down payment on a new Maverick 4 dr.

I went home, regained my sanity, and, the next morning, asked my company's corporate lawyer to squash the deal.

She did, but I still lost my $50.

Wanted a 2002 retro...dealer bet I would not walk away because of the 5,000+ upcharge.
