  • Quickdraw!! Dot says I need your help!

Talking with Dot today at the Dallas All-Ford Picnic, we talked about a N-M hardtop and she suggested contacting Quickdraw for assistance so here goes... LOL

I have a Neiman-Marcus hardtop found in a St. Louis warehouse three years ago.

Trying to associate the N-M top with the specific VIN it shipped with.

There seems to be no direct way to correlate this top with a particular N-M car so I am trying to indirectly tie the two together.

Looking at various N-M registries and cannot find a N-M car that shipped to/was delivered in St. Louis or Missouri.

Find no record of a N-M car being wrecked in those areas either.

Here are two pics of markings on the N-M top, one a yellow tag and one hand-written. Both are under the plastic header on the top.

The hand written part is "30-3-6".

    The yellow tag is printed:
    Date: 5/30/01 ("30" is hand-written over a number I cannot read)
    Completed: TC UL F5
    Opr#: 630
    Sft: 1

ETA It appears the same green marker used to write the "30-3-6" also wrote the "30" on the yellow tag. Same handwriting too so guessing the same person did both.

Hoping Quickdraw can tell me if he has record of an N-M car being delivered in St. Louis or surrounding area or a N-M meeting its demise in the same area.

Sorry to let you down... The destination of all 202 Neiman Marcus units are a mystery. Dealer name and destination for all of them were recorded the same, Unassigned Production - Memo and location Detroit, MI
The first two units (later destroyed by the company) were built 3/14/2001 but regular production of the NM's began 6/11/2001 and ran until the last NM came off the line on 9/30/2001.

The assembly process did not assign a specific hardtop to an individual vehicle. The finished hardtops (in various colors) came in on racks from the outside vendor and were randomly taken off the rack and installed on the appropriate unit as they came down the line.

It appears the top has it's 16th birthday this coming Tuesday, May 30th.

So what happened to the two N-M prototypes that were parted out?

          Where did the parts go?

from mid Aug to late September 2001, apparently it was at Wixom getting a recall part replaced. Seems to me that it had to do with some faulty part in the heating system. I know there are some here that can recall what it was. DavidA, 15AGAIN?

Top dated 5/30 and production began 6/11.

Is a safe assumption that my top was among the first to be made and among the first to be installed at Wixom? That would help narrowing the VIN's.

That registry, when you drill down to each NM VIN, lists the state or city/state that each NM was sold in/delivered to.

What is your opinion of this data?

When we were in Dearborn around July 20th 2001 for the Thunderbird Launch Party there was 800 to 900 Birds in the lot because of a recall. I believe they were waiting for computer chips to be changed.

That would have been a recall that we never heard of on the net. Cars started being shipped right after the launch party but a recall went out on all shipped cars somewhere around Aug 12. A few owners had already taken possession of their cars. They ended up with around 2000 cars recalled from dealerships & railheads for the heating problem. About all had to be shipped back to Detroit.

oh, Lon O'Connell was another one that may remember the part that was replaced as he actually got to sit in his car at the railyard but the yard wasn't allowed to release his car to the dealership and it was shipped back to Detroit. The recall really messed up the order the cars would have been received by dealerships & owners. Seems first ones back to the plant were the last ones to leave the plant after being fixed due to the numbers packed in at the plant.

Wasn't it a hydraulic fan problem?

I haven't drilled down but I believe most of that data was provided by the owner of each vehicle. I can't imagine that all 200 owners registered their cars there so their info is liable to be spotty but whatever information is there is probably very good.

It was the fan control switch. A cheap part that caused a lot of problems for Ford. The cars, (including mine), were returned to the factory and Rouch, (I think), was hired to change out the part as the factory was too busy turning out cars. My car is 1001492 and was originally delivered to the dealer in late August. It never got off the truck and was sent back.

I finally got it in October.

The registry lists the state of delivery of all NM cars. Some NM cars have state, city, dealership and even original buyer.

Have to go VIN by VIN and click the "Names, Comments, Dates" tab.

Recombing the data I've found one NM car originally sold in Missouri.

                              VIN 2Y100128.

I will finish re-researching the registry database today.
