  • T Bird Weight

I Know On Drivers Side Of Door It Says Bird Weighs 4400 Pounds. I Remember Asking Dealer When I Bought Car, And He Said 3800 Pounds, Which Seemed On The Heavy Side To Me For A Car This Size. 4400 Pounds Is Close To The Weight Of My Old Eldorado's. Is The 4400 Correct? If So, Compared To Weight Of Most Other Cars On Road We Are Driving A Tank, Which To Me Is Good Should There Be An Accident.

TonyV. Hate to tell you but your lost in the 50's. Weight doesn't have anything to do with surviving in a crash any longer. It has a lot more to do with crush panels and air bags. The Bird does weight in at 4400 lbs, for the 02's anyway. That's because they are convertibles. A convertible is always heaver then a coupe. This is because of the roll over factor. If you take two cars, say a Mustang hard top and a Mustang Conv. the Conv. will be the heaver of the two even with the same car . High tech. has taken over. If it had to happen I would rather be in a wreck in my Bird then in my 97 F-150 even though the truck has a solid frame under it the Bird is much safer. Compaired to your old Eldorador the Bird is much safer and this is not due to it's weight.

The car weighs about 3,800 pounds. The 4,400 is maximum weight for a fully loaded car, including passengers.

              Base curb weight
Convertible weight 3,775 lbs. (1,699 kg)
Convertible weight w/removable top 3,863 lbs. (1,738 kg)

Gobird, Your Right And Your Wrong!!! I Am Lost In The 50's And Have A Beautiful White Satin Jacket With Red Lettering On Back That Says 'lost In The 50's". I Love It And Love To Wear It Driving The Bird With That Good Ole Doo Wop Music Blasting! I Become 19 Again!

Putting That Aside It Appears Your Wrong On Weight Of Car Being 4400 Lbs. Same Argument I Have With My Friend Dennis Who Has 02 Turq. Bird. He Keeps Saying Go By The Sticker On The Driver's Door. However , The Master, And Keeper Of The Gate, Quickdraw, Broke It Down And It Appears He Is Right. About 3863 Lbs. The 4400 Is Max Weight With 2 People In Car , Average Weight 220 Per Person And 50 To 100 Lbs In Trunk.

So It Looks Like We Have A Little Over 3800lbs Of T Bird, Naked!

I Know What You Saying About Modern Technology, Air Bags, Side Bags, Fenders, Etc Falling Off During Accident But I Got To Tell You, I'd Rather Be In My Old Eldorado If It Hits A New Thunderbird. I Am Sure I Would Walk Out Of Eldo Without Much Damage To Car. The T Bird, They'd Have To Scrape It Off The Pavement!!! Just My Thoughts, But Thank You For Giving Me Your Version Of Weight Of Bird, Talk To You Soon

                    Re: T Bird Weight

I'd still put money on the T-Bird over a Miata or one of those little convertibles (bmw z-4)to survive a bad crash.

                      Re: T Bird Weight

I agree that the weight and size are almost (I said almost) irrelevant. An awful lot of it is pure luck, but the engineering for crashworthiness is getting so good that it is scary. I was driving a friends Miata when a punk driving a stolen car blew a stop sign and totalled me out. I got airbag abrasions on my face and chest with no real injury. It was a really shocking experience and I am absolutely sure it would classify as a "bad crash."

                        Re: T Bird Weight

My 03 TBird weighed in at 3940 (without the hard top installed and without the performance-enhancing white fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror). Subtracting my 180 pounds, that put the car at 3760.

We took it to the truck scales right after we bought it - see our photos in the gallery.

(note: I have since found out that the WHITE performance-enhancing fuzzy dice are really a scam. It's the LAVENDER ones that actually enhance the car's performance. Thanks Joe166!)

                          Tony,
I think I may be lost about four months deeper in the fifties than you. Big sixoh yesterday. Papa who mow mow! The option was limited.
My wife was hit on the left front, at the tire, on 1-2-04 by a longhair, no insurance, suspended license, drugged up jackass turning out of the wrong lane. My wife had lots of pain from seat belt and airbag activity but thank God no serious injury. The impact was enough to turn the bird (red of course) 90 degrees. The steering mechanism was bent up and lots of cosmetics ($12,000ish) but the bird held up well. I'm glad the birds
too heavy. Mary would have been seriously hurt in times past.
ps Mr. piecadoo driving slimebucket is in jail for numerous crimes against society according to my dmv buddy. Keep up the good work, even if you do it slower

                            Thunderbird Chat "Ruined Tire"
                            http://www.thunderbirdnest.com/forum...ead.php?t=6709

Quickdraw may have hit on something relevant to the alleged weight issue in the Ruined Tire thread.
I'm thinking the number of tire curb feeler thingies or lack of them could account for some of the weight variations from one bird to another.
