  • Re: Get build information on your 2002-2005 Thunderbird.

The dollar value fluctuated quite a bit within a years time in Canada during the time these cars were being built. That can account for the difference in price. Color is a factor if one is a special edition and the other is not. As I recall there were 3 price changes from Ford during the 02 production and 1 or 2 each year during the other years. Usually the last price change for a model year seemed to surface during March.

Again thanks for the information. Really am enjoying the bird, even though we did not buy it new we have had it longer than the original buyer.

You could be right about the fluctuation in dollar value Dot but that is a big difference ( about $ 4500.00) and cars were about the same other than colour. Red and Merlot.

Dot, Martin (Snowbird) is correct.... it *HAS* to be the difference in shipping charges - not exchange rates.. The two cars were built five weeks apart, the equipment, base and option invoice costs for both vehicles are identical. Shipping is the only variable... The mystery deepens however....

4Y104005 was shipped from Wixom to Sydney, NS a distance of 1,502 miles - 95% of the way thru Canada. Invoice $63,271 (Canadian $)
4Y105509 was shipped from Wixom to Surrey, BC - a distance of 2,476 miles - 95% of the way thru the US. Invoice $58,870.33.

Although 974 miles further, the second vehicle above invoiced for $4,401 LESS...

The only possible explanation I could suggest is the cheaper one went by rail and other went over the road.

I still hope we can get a knowledgeable person here to explain Ford's shipping charges policy. I was under the impression that shipping charges to all US destinations were averaged and charged the same shipping price. Does it instead go by regions where all destinations in a particular region are averaged and charged the same price? Is it a different policy for Canada?

Harry maybe you should ask John B. He could just as well gotten the PHD in Colorado with Rusty! It appears to me that a lot of the 'low' mint birds you run are without hardtop? I saw the build sheet you donated in Colorado...what is the charge for one? Happy 4th!

I just heard from Harry and this is what he said: of ALL retros built, only 8% were non premium and only 10% had no hardtop. Of the total only 3% were non premium with no hardtop. This would explain (to me at least) some of the low mint numbers. Now another trivia question Harry...In 2003 how many cars were produced with whisper white option? Still waiting to hear on build sheet we saw in Colorado...thanks Harry...too much!

It explains to me why I haven't been able to get a copy of the window sticker for the window sticker project. Please if you have one send it as I now have three requests (also a Canadian request ) Thanks!

Greg: Of the 14,678 2003s made, there were 1,788 Whisper White interiors - 12% - (note: this excludes the 700 Performance White interiors for the 007s). Counting only black 03s with WW interiors there were 119, or 8/10ths of one percent. I'm still working on the build sheets...

                              2002 - VIN 2Y106391

Is there somewhere that explains the other bits of the VIN?

The information I've given you is not "coded" into the VIN, but rather the VIN is used to lookup the information in a database. There are many sites on the web that claim to decode VINs, here's just one: http://www.vindecoder.net/ .
To find more, Google VIN DECODER - if you find a good one that's free let us know.
