I gave up - seems every link is a list of MORE links. And, as I've learned many times, nothing worth having is free.

I was interested to know the meanings of the letters & numbers in the VIN. A shop manual usually spelled it all out in the first chapter, so I was just curious. Somewhere in the past few days I read 3.9L engines from one assembly plant seemed to be more prone to problems than others. I thought the VIN might tell me where my engine was built. However, I would have thought all those engines came from same plant anyway.

F= Identity of Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
A=Vehicle make: Ford
H=Restraint system: Driver, passenger and side air bags with active seat belts
P= Vehicle Type: Passenger
60=Body Style: Standard two door convertible
A= Engine Identification: 3.9L V8
0= Check Digit: Result of mathematical formula used to verify validity of the other 16 digits
2= Year code: 2002
Y= Assembly Plant: Wixom
100300 = The serial number: 100300

The first five digits of all 2002-2005 Thunderbirds are the same (1FAHP)
the 60 in places six and seven will either be 60, 64 (2002 Neiman Marcus), 62 (for the 2003 007 Bond car), 63 (2004 Pacific Coast Roadster) or 69 (2005 Cashmere Special Edition). All ours have A in the eight place and all have Y in the 11th place.

All of our engines were made at the Lima Ohio Engine Plant and all of our transmissions were made at the Sharonville Ohio Transmission Plant.

The first owner was a Dutch fanatic Ford-USA cars dealer (who still services the Bird), he visited often USA with former Dutch Chairman T-bird classic Club (and he collected 74 memorablia incl. very rare pieces (for sale now as 1 piece but impossible into USA: 5 boxes)). The Michigan dealer was probably a friend and I'm the 2nd owner/driver of this PCR (now 12.000 miles)

What made you doubt he sold it new? High mileage for a new car? #1. If maybe 30-40 miles on it, it may have been selected at the factory for an executive to take home and evaluate. #2. If it had hundreds of miles on it, it may have been designated as a "demo" - although it was originally ordered for dealer stock.

Amsterdam, yes, the invoice is the amount the USA dealer was invoiced for the car although decisions after made later could have reduced the cost to the dealer (rebates). I'm also pretty sure this price does not reflect the approximate 2% holdback the dealer receives annually.
