The Wixom plant didn't have its own Instrument Panel line?

With no options, maybe not. Saline built all the basic things and a glove box would be basic, then the assembly plants added the options.

What does I.P. mean?

If it's the white parts label with the vin# ID, those were applied at the plant where the car was being assembled. I did find the last of the labels on a sheet when we picked up our Inca Gold. and they were mentioned at the Wixom tour.

Sorry, assembly plant lingo, instrument panel.

As I recall from the tour, we were told the glove box doors were put on at the factory. In 2003, the Thunderbird was on it's own assembly line so I would assume, the gb door had it's own "station" in line and even in the later lines for the later 04s and 05s..

Trying to recall what we were told about parts bins at Wixom during our tour in 2005 and how parts are put on the cars. In the case of the glove box serial #s (this applies to 2004 and 2005, too), the plaques were placed on the glove boxes before the lids were put in the parts bin and later installed in the cars.

The glove box lids were in a particular bin, probably by color, so that when a car was designated to get a glove box lid, the correct color part was located, pulled from its bin, and placed on the car.

Who knows how they were removed from the parts bin and in what order. Were there rows of the parts? Were they stacked? There may have been some order at first when the stack was new, but later on, when other cars also went thru the assembly line, a worker may have just pulled the closest one available from the bin when that color was needed, not knowing there was any order in the stacks. Serial #s thus became mixed and random.

So, this is why we are tracking the serial #s with the vin#s.

Here is my answer back on the glove box doors. I was almost sure that they were installed to the instrument panel at Saline. No answer on who installed the 007 number.

I ran into Julie Newman who was at Visteon. She said the glove box door was installed PIA to the IP then shipped to Wixom.<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = "O" /><O:P></O:P>

Here is an interesting one for you - VIN 1FAHP62A43Y100072.

The VIN would suggests it is a 007 Edition, (at least based on the number of 007 Serial Numbers in the Thunderbird Registry List). The car is (or was) apparently in Salem, Oregon. In an on-line site, the owner was "searching for a dash panel for a 2003 Ford Thunderbird "007 Edition". Part fits above the glove box and says "Thunderbird" on the right side and "007" on the left side" ( http://market.autopartsfair.com/used...t-1458811.html ).

According to the Thunderbird registry - "The dealer states that it did not come with a hard top when they bought it at a Ford Motor Company auction."

This would appear to be the lowest VIN that includes the 007 Body Code (62A). It is apparantly one of three that was built in October of 2002.

VIN 1FAHP62A63Y100073 is another 2003 with the 62A Body Code which identifies it as an 007 Edition. It showed up on a salvage vehicle website several years ago - http://www.autobidmaster.com/carfind...HINA_GROVE_NC/ . It is the right color and a picture on the salvage vehicle website confirms that it is #78 of 700.

Ed, Yes, 100072, 10073, and 100074 were all 007s and were the first three made and were built on 10/14/2002. And there were only 700 of the 007s made.

How did you get your 701 figure from the thunderbirdregistry? It looks like there are 28 pages of VINs with 25 cars on each page = 700.
