it was on a removable part. It was part of the trunk liner.

It sounds like you got a fresh trunk liner... apparently made less than a month before installation... If it was hand written it is likely that your part was at the top of a stack of like items to identify the batch. They wouldn't hand write the date on every mass produced item.

Greg, From my experience of 30+ years in the Auto business, the first of any model year were where all the kinks were worked out. (That is GM experience, maybe Mr. McCloud or Mr. Sharp or other Ford employees feel differently). I would not want the first ones off the line! I would think collectors would say the last of the last would be what you wanted instead of the first of the last.

Greg, From my experience of 30+ years in the Auto business, the first of any model year were where all the kinks were worked out. (That is GM experience, maybe Mr. McCloud or Mr. Sharp or other Ford employees feel differently). I would not want the first ones off the line! I would think collectors would say the last of the last would be what you wanted instead of the first of the last.

I wouldn't especially want one of the first of a newly designed vehicle either. It's been almost 50 years since I worked at an assembly plant so Ron would be a better source, however, it is my belief that the later models of the first year are OK to buy. By the second year they have learned where to combine work operations and reduce the total number of assembly employees. Each year the plant is under pressure to reduce production costs.

Although more options are typically available in later model years they also have learned where they can cut corners in production. The last few years of the previous Taurus (2000-2007) saw many cost cuts. From Wikipedia:
To reduce the car's price and keep it competitive, Ford reduced costs on the car in 1999, such as giving the Taurus sedan rear drum brakes on ABS equipped vehicles (previously, upgrading to ABS included the addition of rear disc brakes), eliminating the dual exhaust on the higher end models, and trimming many other small features.

In any case it's not likely anyone could tell if the car was the first or last car off the line based on quality. UNLESS it was something pointed out to them.

(Harry I do believe that from the e-mail I got from Mike that this bronze was to replace their totaled Silver).
