    Ray,
Three months isn't much for a car to sit on the lot. Look at Red Bird Dave, his was on the lot for 16 months. Ive heard there are still new 2002s on some dealer lots and the 2005s are nearly out. Dealers don't seem to sweat it carrying the car at these low interest rates.

Whats the recommended oil change interval? Isn't it 5,000 miles OR six months, whichever comes first? Does anyone think the dealers change oil on a car thats been on the lot for over a year? (But then I don't think it really needs it either).

Mike, I don't know about that but people that toured the Wixom plant when they had tours were given an extra bit of documentation on their cars. Can anyone describe what they gave out?

Quickdraw, I have a couple of the dates you give but it would be interesting to see when my dealer ordered the car and when it was delivered.
Here is my number 1FAHP60AX3Y107837. Thanks for your knowledge and info.

Engine oil doesn't go bad just sitting in a cold crankcase over a reasonable period of time. (Especially synthetics) The time interval for oil changes is largely driven by the notion that anyone who puts relatively few miles on their car over a period of time probably does a lot of starting/stopping and in-town driving where the engine may not come up to full operating temperature.

The primary reason to change oil is to address the issue of oil dillution from moisture and fuel which can happen when engines are started and driven short distances routinely. A car that sits on the lot for a year really doesn't need an oil change unless it's been started a zillion times.

Modern engines warm up very quickly (by design) and the fuel injection systems eliminate much of the fuel dillution that one would get years ago with carbuerators and mechanical chokes.

Thank you, you really sound like you know what you are talking about. I store mine for the 4-5 winter months and I do change the oil just before storing. However I was told it was just as important to change the oil immediately after taking it out of storage. I never did that as it didn't sound right and you seem to confirm that it's not necessary. Thanks.

EDIT: Dot has pointed out an error in the database from which I draw this information. Apparently it can't handle a period over a one year delay between order date and build date. RT42, G1GRANDGALLOP, and Rembr55 were originally reported by me as 2002 order dates but Dot said they must have been 2001 orders. Thanks Dot.
